Firefox 2.0 Official Release

http://www.winplanet.com/file/11807.htm

Oops - might have jumped the gun - 404.

EDIT: Bad link on that page - this should work. It's not downloading, but no errors.

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.or...etup%202.0.exe

Edit again - looks like it's not quite ready - or the server is overloaded.

the servers must be overloaded, i downloaded it about 2 hours ago without incident, and it installed and is running just fine.

now I'm trying to figure out if its actually running faster than 1.5 or if it's just in my head.

no major issues, though it did crash on me once. i gave it about 2 minutes to try to pull itself out of its hangup, but i noticed the memory usage climbing up in task manager. i was viewing another forum and it was having a hard time loading from an ad server and it caused it to lock up. what i love, though, is that once i did end the task and relaunched firefox it gave me the option of starting a new session or renewing the old one. i clicked renew and it opened up all my tabs and the page loaded fine that time. i realize this feature was available as an extension before, but its definitely a nice stock option as well as the built in spell checker. overall, i am pleased. the new tab bar (both eyecandy and features) is nice as well.

the thing i hate, though, is that history has been added to the menu and now conflicts with Alt-s when posting in forums

The official release date is tomorrow if you want to wait to see any issues with early adopters.

That would be me -- The list of new features are attractive, and I'll be giving it a shot. I just hope it doesn't work itself into too much bloat or have too many slowdowns due to too many features...

I have been using it most of the day today with no issues at all, using 10-15 different web sites and a range of links.

I have found it is always best to wait for the first service pack. Let the masses find the bugs.

Odd... I just clicked the "Check for Updates" and it said "No updates" ... but I'm still running 1.5.x. Went to their site, and poof, there it was!? I'll be installing it in minutes

i think they disable that feature for the first couple days/weeks, cause i have noticed that on all versions, that when a new version is available the first couple days that even if you use the check for updates option it doesnt find it. im thinking its disabled so they dont overload the servers on the new download, but i could be way off base.

2.0.0 > 2.0.1 is a service pack release (some call it revisions, but they are the same thing).

I HEART SPELL CHECKER!!

Yes that needed to be in all caps. I have the worst spelling in the world, and now maybe nobody will know...

Just got it on one of the computers at my school and all looks to be well. I will install it when i get home on my computer and see how it works.

I sure does feel zippier to me, too. So far so good -- like that spell checker, too

I installed it but since I really don't use FireFox much I don't have an opinion on it yet. I prefer to use Opera.

Too bad FasterFox isn't compatible with the FireFox 2 yet...I liked how it made FireFox a bit quicker.

Just installed it this morning.
It feels faster and all of my extensions, except Bookmark Backups, either made the transfer or had updates waiting.
So far it's solid.

edit : OK, I can't use Tools to open Thunderbird from within Firefox.
Also the AVG e-mail scanner is hanging after it connects to Verizon incoming.

I installed it a couple hours ago. Nice visual upgrade, and there's not much changed at first glance. I like that, in a way

A couple things:
Alt-S is used in this forum software (and some others) as "Post Reply". Firefox seems to have re-assigned that to open the history menu
Quick Fix
hobey19 mentioned that earlier.

"Find as you type" only allows you to find the first instance of the word. I can no longer press alt-n to go to the next instance. Instead, I have to escape out of the "find as you type" box, manually press "Ctrl-F", and then repeat my search.

A couple wasted steps there, but I'm hoping there may be something I can change in the preferences for this one.

Fasterfox also wasn't supported, but that's normal... I'll give it a couple days.

Solid work.. I like the built-in form spellchecker

P.S. Firefox highlighted "spellchecker" *rolls eyes*

What do you mean? Pressing Enter or Alt+N takes me to subsequent instances of the search term

Well that's probably because there is no word called spellchecker or spellcheck .. most dictionaries list it as hyphenated.

Among the really nice features is the built in session manager? CTRL+T opens a new tab .. CTRL+Shift+T brings back a closed tab from the dead!

Nope - Ctrl+Shift+T, not Tab.

Spell checker is 2 words.

I realized Just making a little joke.

As for the find as you type thing: I have firefox set up to start searching the page right when I type something on the screen, as long as the cursor is not focused on something like an input box. (This means I don't have to press "Ctrl-F" to bring up the search box)

1.5.0.7 would pop up the "Find" bar, and would allow me to find the next instance, previous instance, etc...

But in version 2.0, a "Quick Find" box bar pops up, which doesn't have any of those options...

This may help:

When we began typing a search term in RC2, a Quick Find tab opened at the bottom of the browser window that offered only a small field for the search term, removing the "next," "previous," "highlight all" and "match case" options that we have become accustomed to in the Find In This Page tab.

Some will welcome this change as a simpler option, and we liked that the Quick Find tab disappeared quickly once we stopped typing. However, we prefer the full Find In This Page tab, which now comes up only if the user hits Ctrl-F or accesses the Find In This Page option from the browser menu.
P.S. Spellchecker highlighted "firefox"

Has the rediculous amount of memory Firefox consumes been addressed in 2.0?

Left firefox on for a couple hours: Memory usage at 60k... I personally don't notice any difference in performance of my computer any way
