IE7 vs. FF2

Here is a head to head comparison of the 2 browsers. Interesting that none of them got really great marks from the judges.

Note: this is a not meant to become a FF vs. IE thread. It is just a comparison.

lol - as for me, im using IE7 on vista and have found it to be better than FF2, but i know they can improve, and use the other browser for inspiration on what to do in their next versions. Eg, i like firefox's extentions, and the vast customizability of it. However, i really like the IE7 interface and higher built in security. I also like that in IE7 you can see what is happening in all the tabs by pressing one button. FF2 on the other hand as the option of opening recently closed tabs which might have been closed by accident. So improvements on both sides, with IE having improved drastically from IE6, but there is still work to be done.

I have been using Firefox for the past 6-8 months on a daily basis, and the single most important feature to me has been the way they handle the tabs. I have been frustrated by the number of web based items which don't work properly without some form of add in. Each one of these streaming audio, news, highlights, jokes, or sports video which does not work from FF I immediately switch to IE, and it works fine.

So when I upgraded to IE 7 and FF 2.0 this week I was very happy to see the way IE 7 handles the tabs.

For me, IE 7 is going to be my new default browser. I am a home user, so my standards are clearly different from many on this board.

Its the great extensions that keep me a FF fan. I use Opera frequently as well - especially when downloading because its download menu is really nice and it seems to open and manipulate the tabs slightly faster than FF.

OK, you guys got me. What the heck is an extension, exactly, and what function do they normally serve in a traditional end user browser. Each time I see the word extension I think " programmer tools ".

Are these useful to me as an end user? If so, how?

Extensions are add-ons to the browser. Additional tools, if you will. My favorite extension is FasterFox (which allows the user to enable prefetching to make pages load faster) and then NoScript, which allows the user to control which pages are allowed to execute javascript.

There are hundreds of extensions, such as ad-block.

Extensions are small add-ons that add new functionality to Firefox, from a simple toolbar button to a completely new feature. They allow you to customize Firefox to fit your own needs and preferences, while letting us keep Firefox itself light and lean.
Edit: Cricket beat me to it!
