dialup problems
I have a friend with an old Dell computer, think it is a 4300 about 5 or 6 years old. Cleared the hd and reinstalled Windows XP. Now it will only connect with one of the dialup phone numbers. Tried a different modem and different PCI slot, nothing worked. He has a brand new Dell in the same house and all three numbers work well. What could be the problem?
I know it does not matter much to find out why only one number works but I would like to know and I have another computer at home that is doing the same thing. Sorry, forgot to say what they are doing. They will dialup and then it tries to verify the username and password, then it says invalid username and password. I have gone in and re-entered the username, password, and phone number but this did not help. Thanks for any replies. |

Does the ISP use username or username@domain.com type login? Is it a standard dialup networking ISP or one that uses proprietary connection software (AOL, Netzero, etc.)?

It uses username@domain.com to login. If I understand correctly, it is a local provider, but is actually Earthlink.

That would be a standard DUN provider and username@domain.com is correct.
Create only one connection with the number that works. Do not add more connections with the other numbers - add the other numbers as alternates to the working connection. |

There are 3 access numbers, one of the computers can connect to all three (brand new dell), and the other will only connect to one of the numbers (old dell). Both computers are in the same house hold. Why is this?

Do you have a single connectoid with 3 numbers or 3 separate connectoids? How are the dialing rules set up?

If I am understanding you correctly, it is a single connectoid and 3 numbers. I know this is not that important to find out since both computers can connect but I would like to understand why 2 of the access numbers dont work on one of the computers. By the way, thank you very much for taking the time to answer this question.
I am not sure on the dialing rules, always dial my default connection is what it is set to. I do not believe this is what you are looking for though. Sorry, I dont know much about dialup. |

Dialing rules - as in phone and modem options - the area code, is a "1" required, do you have to disable call waiting, etc.
