Probably a firewall or proxy, just as you thought.
Email the ISP and tell them how much you really appreciate their help (NOT!), and set up ICQ for a firewall.
Personally, I'd dump the idiots, and get a real ISP, one who puts the word SERVICE back in Internet SERVICE Provider.

Cool

Hi Rosanna
I see you are in Melbourne. If your not already using Free Net then give them a try you should have no trouble using ICQ. If you are trying to use ICQ with Free Online then it won't work because they don't allow chat.
Hope this helps
Chris

Question

Thanks for your suggestions. We do use FreeNet and ICQ works fine, as you say Chris. The other one is Globalfreeway. Oh well.

As an aside, we have ICQ 2000a installed. Is it possible to have it set up (on the same PC) for 2 users? We think the previous version allowed this but cannot seem to get this version to allow it. Any thoughts?

Hi Rosanna
I would send an email to global freeway and ask them why ICQ is not working because they advertise they have no restrictions only time limits (2hrs I think).
As for multiple users on ICQ, we use 99b so it hasn't been a problem. Try visiting their home page and look for support information there.
Chris.

With ICQ2000, click on My ICQ (with the little heart),then choose 'Change User On This Computer', then choose 'Add Another Registered User'.
