The BYOS Guide
http://pcmech.com/byos/
Very through and informative, however, I can't find the date it was written. The article still pushes for Windows 2000, and I was wondering if that was still a good choice, or if perhaps Windows XP would be a better choice? |

That article is from 2003 or older so some of the info is a bit dated. XP Pro is the XP replacement for 2000Pro.

Windows 2000 Pro is still a very viable choice for a home fileserver. It gives you a lot more control over access than XP Home and it avoids a lot of XP pro's fluff. For me, 2000 is actually easier to configure for this use than XP Pro because it's not constantly shoving wizards in my face.
