firefox2 enormous memery useage

While browsing with firefox I've been noticing PC slowdown.. I checked the resources and with 3 tabs open firefox is using 480MB! This isn't a one time thing, everytime I've got it open with a few tabs running the memory useage climbs above 3 or 4 hundred MB.

whats the deal here?

I experience the same problem consistently as well. This has always been my biggest complaint with FF. From what I can tell it's been a problem since 1.5.

Once I had 199 tabs open in FF2.0 and it was only sucking up 540 MB. Something is definitely wrong. FWIW, I have seen far fewer memory-leak problems with 2.0 than I did with 1.5.

must have been an extension. I removed a few extensions, included adblock and fasterfox, plus one or 2 others and now memory useage is staying under 100 mb.
