slow downloads

I'm having trouble understanding why my download speed is so slow.
I have a dial up connection which connects at 115200bps and my download speed is 2 to 2.5KB/s. I feel this is much slower than it should be but I have no computer buffs near my home to compare #'s with so I've turned to the brightest gurus on the net.
(How's that for a suck up line?) LOL



Modem=Diamond SupraMAX 56i Voice PCI
Distance from internet provider 35km (approx 25 miles)
No line noise no disconnect or connect problems.

First, the Diamond Max is known to be a POS generally.
Second, 115,200bps is impossible on a modem that's rated at 56000bps, thus, you are getting a reading of your port speed, not your modem speed.

What to do.
First, what driver version do you have for that modem? I'll find you a GOOD driver.
Second, once I know the driver version, I can get you some init strings to try and speed things up.
Third, read this, then this, and lastly, and most importantly, this.
Fourth, go to my modems page, and get iSpeed and install it.
Fifth, get back to me after you've done the above, and we'll "get you up to speed".

Hi Jim; I'm green as he** when it comes to drivers. I've gone to device manager driver file details and find several vxd & dll files of different providers and file versions. I'm a little unsure of what to provide you with, so here are all of them.

I presently have "net boost" installed but will switch to "Ispeed" if that is your recommendation.

Something to try. Under modem properties, place this in extra settings:

S202=32S95=1

Meanwhile, follow Reboot's ideas.

Thanks sarge but before I play to much I'd like to here back from Jim. I have an uncanny ability of being able to screw this thing up royaly.

I just went in to see what I had there and low and behold, I saw the string you just supplied. I must have stuck it in there from another post????????

OK, the screen shot helps, but the number I was looking for is just below all the .vxd stuff, it's 2.1.2.136a which is a REALLY bad driver for this modem.
There's 2 ways to go here.
First, go to my modems page, and get 2.1.2.135b and install it using the instructions also on my modems page.
Get iSpeed while you're there.
Then read this to help set up iSpeed.
Check your connect/throughput speed.
Go back to my modems page, and get 2.1.2.161.000 and try the whole thing again.
Use the driver that works best for you.
If neither are satisfactory, then let me know, and I'll find lots more versions to try.
Using S202=32S95=1 should at least give you correct connect speed, not 115,200.
BTW, you can take SARGE's advice anytime, he knows mucho about modems and phone lines!

Thanks reboot for the help. I did everything I was supposed to even got some improvement which led me to try the second set of drivers.
Blue screened me to death and then crashed. OH OH Man i new I did something I shouldn't have. I couldn't get back on line, so I dumpt my modem changed everything back, played with this and played with that and here I am.
I'm back to my old drivers for the night but I did initiate all the other recommended changes.Since it took me over 3 hours to sort out my incompetence I think I'll try your drivers again tomorrow.
What the hay the more I crash the more I learn. LMAO

Sarge: I didn't mean to question your knowledge I just felt that since I started with Jim's changes I should stick with him till they were complete.
BUT now that HEEEEEE made MEEEEEEE crash you can help again.

I haven't checked lately, but Reboot has an explicit set of instructions to follow when using his drivers. If you follow them to the letter, they should work. Some guy used a generic driver that comes with either/both Win95 and Win98, and "supposedly" it fixed his problem. I've never had to tinker with drivers and been hesitant to even play with them.
Using the "S" settings, what connect speed are you getting? For all we know, you have telco impairments.

Sarge I'm still reading my port speed according to reboot and it still says 115200bps. I know Iscrewed up on Jim's instructions somewhere but not being the kind to give up I'll try again.

Jim I'm very curious about this paragraph from the tweaks at Tweak 3D. I find it a wee bit confusing . You say instal iSpeed he says remove it??????

If he says, "Uninstall iSpeed", then he's changed his tune since I last read it.
I'm guessing he wants you to set the thing up manually through regedit, but not sure.
I still recommend iSpeed, as the best DUN tweaker there is.
Follow whichever makes you the most comfortable.
Forget 2.1.2.161.000, stick with the 2.1.2.135b driver. It's more stable anyhow, and will NOT cause a crash like the other.

What do you have in extra settings when reports 115000 speed? It's obviously wrong. Try one of these, by themselves:

S95=0
S95=1
W2
MR=2

One of 'em works; I believe you posted that S95=1 didn't report true speed. Try others
