Net connection problem?
Sorry for the newb nature of this question -
Was typing in 'ipconfig /all' into the command prompt line of DOS to check IP details (was following some advice from another website) and got the following error: "Windows IP Configuration An internal error occured: A device attached to the system is not functioning. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help. Additional information: Unknown media status code." I've got no real idea what this means. Used the 'add hardware' facility on the control panel and it says all connected hardware is working properly. I've long suspected something is not quite right with my internet connection however as I had to set it up myself following instructions that came with the modem/router. Nothing went as described and I ended up just fiddling with settings until suddenly... it just worked. Not sure if I did it right or wrong or whatever. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you. PS Dunno if the following helps - my router is a D-LINK DSL 502-T. Under network connections I have three connections listed: Under the heading 'Internet Gateway' 1) 'Local area connection on DSL-502T', listed as connected. Under the heading 'LAN or High Speed Internet' there are three connections: 1) 1394 connection/1394 Net Adaptor 2) broadband iinet/D-Link USB remote NDIS Netw... (iinet is my isp) 3) Local Area Connection/NVIDIA nForce Networking Co... 1 and 3 are listed as connected, 2 is listed as disconnected, yet I have a working internet connection. I can open webpages fine as I write this. All this network stuff confuses me, I'm not sure if I have a problem here or not and would basically like to understand my computer a little better in this area. If anyone could help it would be hugely appreciated

what i understand from your post is that you are using more then 1 NIC or modem cards?
When you use the command "Ipconfig /all" to check your IP configuration, it doesnot show you any thing because your NIC or modem cards are not configured to use internet service but instead your computer is configured to use internet through dsl modem ,any other external modem. |

1 and 3 internet connections are disabled and your computer might be contacting these connections where it couldnot find any ip configuration.

Thanks for the reply ITLover. As far as I know there is just an old dial up modem card inside the machine and a network card (is that the NIC?). The router is external. The router is connected to the network card. The router is connected to the card by two cables, one is USB the other cable, not sure what type it is, comes out the routers 'ethernet' port. That's always struck me as being somehow not right. There's only the one machine hooked upto the router, and from memory the instructions to set up only required one cable. But that didn't work...
Anyway my internet works, I've just always had a gut feeling it's not connected up exactly how its supposed to be in some way. |

You should be using either the USB or Ethernet, not both. The only time you should have to use software to set up that router is if you use the USB. I would disconnect the router and uninstall any and all software and hardware related to the router. Then open up the manual and reinstall it using the instructions for Ethernet.
