IE7 Problems

I just installed IE7. I didn't have any problems with the install. Started to use it and try different websites. I opened 4 or 5 IE 7 windows without any problems. Then when I tried to open another the browzer opened, but was blank with the message "Internet Explore has encountered a problem and needs to close. On the left it says Debug and on the right it says close. When I clicked on Debug the window closed. I deleted the cookies and temporary files, but I still have the same problem. I closed all the browser windows, but one and still have the same problem.

I am running Windows Home Ed with all the updates. I have an Athlon 2400+ with 500 MB RAM. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Try a reinstall. You can download the offline IE7 install from MS's IE7 page.

I have reinstalled it twice. I have noticed that when I reboot the system the problem clears and I can open up a few browsers and then I get the message internet explorer has encountered a problem. I can continue to work in a browser that I already have opened, I just can't open any new ones. With IE6 I usually have 15 - 20 browsers open at one time without any problems. The only way that I have found to clear the problem is to reboot.

That is most likely a problem with Microsoft. I have been experiencing similar issues, but my system is not kind enough to tell that that MSIE7 is crashing. Keep in mind that IE7 is a very substantial leap from IE6 - it isn't a simple update as IE5 to IE6 was.

I'm just curious - do you really use 20 browser windows on a regular basis?

What about (disable any antivirus/antispyware before starting):

1. Uninstall IE7
2. Reboot
3. Reinstall IE7
4. Reboot

It's worth a shot.

This suggestion does not fix the problem, but I'm going to say it anyway. If you are in the habit of having 20 windows open at once, why not try a tabbed browser that's been around for longer than IE7 - such as Opera or Firefox? You can install either or both without affecting IE or even changing your default browser.

Are you opening several instances of IE7 or several tabs within the first IE7 ?

Yes, I do have about 15 windows open at once. Most of them are charts and data related to investing. I have tried disabling the anti-virus before installing IE7, along with deleting cookies, temp files, and prefetch files and I still have the same problem. Mostly, I am opening several instances of IE7.

Currently, I have uninstalled IE7 and have gone back to IE6 and I have not experienced any problems in IE6. I think I will give Firefox or Opera a try. Any preferences to either one? Thanks for all your help.

Opera tends to be a bit faster for me but I still prefer FF. Make sure you search for and get some of the more usefull extensions...great stuff.

I would actually suggest to install both Opera & FF and try them out for awhile and see which you prefer. They run fine along side each other.

I personally use Firefox and there are a whole plethora of extensions and themes that you can download and use to customize Firefox to your liking.

But like 12 said, if you download both and use each one a little while, then you can choose for yourself which one you truly prefer.

You can also try using IE7 in the tabbed mode instead of the separate instance mode.

Even if you use tabs, IE7 uses a good bit more processes. A simple test of 11 websites loaded in tabs used around 160MB of RAM. The same ones in FF were around 85MB. Each IE7 window when loaded individually used around 24MB.

So you might increase your RAM or load it in tabs.

Could the problem be that more memory is needed with IE7 and having so many windows opened? I will probably try reinstalling IE7 tomorrow and use tabs rather than separate instances to see how that works. Thanks for your feedback.

I reinstalled IE7 and it ran okay until I went to a page that uses Java and the page seemed to lock up and then when I tried anything else I got the IE error message. So the problem seems related to a particular website and Java with IE7. I have uninstalled IE7 and will play with Firefox and Opera. Thanks for your help.

Try uninstalling all Java and reinstalling the latest Sun Java.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Java. It worked briefly and then crashed. Maybe IE7 is not meant to work on this computer. I have a Dell laptop with basically the same software and it works fine with IE7. I have taken your previous suggestion and I am trying Firefox and Opera. I like them both, but I need to play with them more. Right now I am leaning towards Opera, but I have a problem with it that I wrote about in a new post. Again, thanks for everyone's help.
