Question

I recently installed my ISP's latest version of Netscape (which is only 4.6, to show how far behind they are). The default value of disk cache is 0 when I first opened this new Netscape. So I go into "Preferences" and set the disk cache to 1024. As long as I don't shut down my PC, I can exit and restart Netscape and the disc is saved at 1024. The minute I power off my PC and then enter Netscape, the disk cache is reset to 0. On other PCs, preferences for Netscape are saved permanently until you go in and change them. Mine always seems to return to some default values whenere I restart the PC. Any suggestions as to how I might save my preferences? Thanks for your help.

That's an awful small disk cache. The defaults on the unbranded netscape are 1024 memory and 7680 disk.

You can manually edit preferences in the prefs.js file in your user directory. Just open it in Notepad and what you need to do will be pretty obvious. There is a liprefs.js in there too which might need the same treatment.

Thanks, glc, I'll give it a try and see what happens.

glc,

Just fyi, I diddled around with the prefs and liprefs files, but the same thing happened -- when I power down and back up again my disk cache goes back to zero.

My ISP finally has Netscape 4.72 and they are sending it to me. Hopefully I won't have this annoyance with the new version. Thanks anyway.

Why don't you just *download* the unbranded version of 4.73 from Netscape?

Try this - rename your prefs.js and liprefs.js and redo all your preferences.
