ADSL Security

I may be getting ADSL soon. The guy came yesterday and said that, with the first modem, the signal was too weak and I maybe too far from the router. Is that possible. I'm not more than 2 kilometers away from anything in my community, but. . . Any ideas? We will try a newer and better modem to see if it will pick up the signal.

To my question. . .If this does work out, what kind of security should I be looking at since now my computer will be connected 24 hrs a day. I have Norton Antivirus, but do I need something else?

You need at least something like zonealarm. And even better a separate router or a pc with something like freesco on it.

I use both a Linksys router and zonealarm. The router stops the enemy from the outside. Zonealarm stops the enemy within, ie spyware and other proggies.

I'm on a router only. Spyware & trojans have no chance making it to my machines.

I also run a router coupled with ZoneAlarm. Linksys has actually incorportated support for ZoneAlarm in the latest release of their firmware.

Mosquito, how do you figure that spyware or Trojans can't get into your system with only a router?

Spyware is anything from RealPlayer to WinAmp. Although maybe they don't spy on you, every time you use them they hop on the Internet to check for an upgrade. ZoneAlarm stops this. The router could care less.
