Setting up FTP server

I am in the process of setting up a Linux based FTP server and have a couple of high level questions.

First question. My home network has two routers. One is the gateway to the outside world and the second is where the FTP server will connect to. Are there special settings I need to be aware of once I set up the hardware?

Thanks.

You should not be using 2 routers. If you need to extend the ports on your main router, use a switch, not another router. You cannot run a public server behind 2 layers of network address translation.

The second router is set-up as a switch.

Set up as a switch - as in nothing is connected to the WAN/Internet port, its IP address is in the same subnet as the main router, and its DHCP server is disabled?

Assign the FTP server a static IP address, forward the required ports to it in the main router.

If you are using the default FTP port (21), you might want to check to see if your ISP blocks it. A lot of ISPs block port 21 and 80.
