Hotmail charging?
I'm hearing strong rumors that Hotmail will start charging folks who want Outlook Express to be able to access the Hotmail account...
Any truth to this? TIA ![]() TR |

I thought they already did that for accounts created after a certain date, but they allowed older accounts free access to grandfather them in.

There is a Wikipedia entry on them charging.
Personal opinion is that as long as they have competition that isn't charging for popmail then they won't charge.

If they start charging, they'll lose the customers right away. People will switch to GMail, or Yahoo!.

It's a gray area calling people using a free service "customers".
If you read that Wikipedia article, Hotmail as we know it is going away anyway. It's going to be renamed "Windows Live Mail". Another note is Windows Mail - the replacement for Outlook Express in Vista - does not support HTTP mail. The days of the grandfathered free pop access accounts are numbered. It won't be Microsoft's first unpopular business decision, and I'm sure it won't be the last either. Why would people switch to Yahoo? Their free mail has always been web-only. Gmail still requires an invite or signup using your cell phone. Hotmail will still be free with Web access, they are only doing away with other means of getting it. Gmail is accessible to everyone now as of someday this week or last week I believe.
