Issue with internet, AOL provider.
Trying to fix a friends computer. She has time warner internet (Roadrunner) and AOL as her ISP.
On her laptop, she has AOL 9.0 installed, and the internet is recognized by the computer. On the PC I am fixing, it is newly reformatted with no AOL. Just plugging the ethernet cord from the router to the PC is not getting anything recognized. I'm guessing you need the AOL software to accept the internet? Some way of AOL restricting it? The problem is, AOL's installer is a downloader. I can get the file on a cd, and bring it to the PC, but theres no way for it to download the other files. I'm thinking of finding a free AOL download disk and installing that, just to get connected. But uhh, any other advice would be appreciated. ps. This would be here router/modem: http://www.arrisi.com/product_catalo...dex.asp?id=348 Last edited by rabidsheeep; 03-18-2007 at 12:24 PM. |

That's not a router, it's a cable modem with IP telephony circuits. It needs to be connected TO a router in order to support more than 1 computer. You will need to clone the MAC address of the laptop's Ethernet adapter into the router. You can't just recycle the modem's power to switch it from one PC to another because of the battery backup.

Whoops, typed things wrong. Yes, I understand it's a modem, and I'm not trying to supply internet to both computers, only the PC. I'm just using the laptop right now to get on here.

Right - and you cannot switch it to the desktop without a MAC reset - which you can't do yourself because of the battery backup.
