Copying/Creating folders via FTP
Okay, a new workstation is in place as my FTP server for the simple fact it's a small form Compaq so I can stick it anywhere, and no where near as loud as my clone. With that said I noticed today when I was copying files from work to the FTP server it works fine, but when I try to create a blank folder on the FTP server or/and copy a blank or popluated folder to the FTP server it won't allow it. Why?

You don't have permission on the FTP server to create files. Is this a Windows server or a 'nix one?

The FTP server is XP Pro with NTFS. How is that the case if I can copy files to it? Meaning, if I can copy files to it, one would think I could copy an empty or even populated folder.

What FTP server software are you using? Are you logging in to the FTP with unrestricted privileges?

Assuming you're using Filezilla Server (and not WS_FTP, or whatever it was you chose in the other thread)...
This is the setup screen with user permissions. http://www.kareeser.com/images/filezilla.png Note that the "Create" box under "Directories" must be checked for you to create subdirectories. In my screenshot, I've checked all the boxes. This allows full, unrestricted access. Last edited by Kareeser; 03-22-2007 at 05:00 PM. |

I am using Filezilla to access it, but using the standard IIS w/FTP software from XP Pro to make the FTP server.

The wife and I have been over it for a few hours now and we can't figure it out. Not to mention we found other things that just did not see right. So I plugged back in the original FTP and that works fine, and all the settings are exactly the same to the one that is not working, so we are just going to format and try one more time, otherwise I will just stick with the clone with the loud fans. Now this Compaq PC has had it's share of issues in the past (possibly hardware) and I have seen hardware issues make problems appear to be software when indeed it's hardware. If this happens to be one of those situations I am sure it would be memory where in that case if we don't have something lying around, I will then again just go back to the clone.

Why don't you try a 3rd party FTP server instead of IIS?

The IIS FTP should work fine. Just make sure the Windows user account you log into your FTP site with (DO NOT use your administrator login) has full control of the source FTP folder.
You can set the permissions for the FTP folder by opening the location in Windows Explorer > Right Click > Sharing and Security > Security Tab > Add the Windows User > Check the box for full control. |

The reason for not using a secondary FTP program is I am following the company's standards that I work for. So for practice I am following that on PC's I setup at my home.
I did everything you guys suggested and everything I found on the web but would not work. However, after I reloaded the OS, patched her up, and re-configured it she started to work just fine. Something got broken, and I guess I will never know what. |
