As far as winmodems go, it's one of the better ones.
I don't care what driver version you have now, get driver 2.1.2.135b from somewhere, anywhere (try here first.) Install it using the instructions on the same page. Don't worry about your com port assignment, although if you want it on com 2, then remove the modem and all com ports in device manager, then disable com 2 in BIOS setup, restart, and reinstall. You may have to put the modem in a different slot, but depends on mobo. Once you've got it working with the new (older, v2.1.2.135) driver, get to the extra settings box, and put in +MS=V90,1,,,36000,56000;S202=32S95=1 ------------------ Who needs a life?, I have internet! They lied to you. It's a winmodem, although it's only partially CPU controlled.
Read my response to your other post. If you want a hard modem, settle for nothing less than the Diamond Supra Express. At $79 (internal or external) it's the BEST modem ever built. ------------------ Who needs a life?, I have internet! Cheers, Jim Jim & Sue's Free Files | Jims Modems |

Hi reboot this might seem like an odd question but how do you tell the difference between a hard and soft modem, as I bought this yesterday and I paid a bit more for this modem thinking it to be a hard modem I asked for an hard modem because I was assumming these to be better because my processor is only a cyrix PR 200 and thought this modem would help.Just so I have a bit more information when take it back. because I did ask for a hardware modem, they may have got it wrong, but because they are well up on these things they will probably say its an hardware modem.

Hi reboot
Thanks for your input I did ring the store where I bought the modem and they still reckon its a hard modem but I have no real proof to say its not. They have sold hundreds of these modems as hard modems, I would need written proof and I have been to the rockwell modem site but there's nothing to say its either soft or hard modem, and as you say in your reply its only partially CPU controlled, so I don't really know were I stand, as it sound as if this modem is more or les or between a soft and a hard modem the store may have been told to sell it as a hard modem, its a very tricky border line case. I would hope maybe somebody from conexant/rockwell may read these pages and could put us all right. MARKBLACK |

If the store can't tell you the diff between a hard modem and a soft modem, they shouldn't be selling modems!!!
![]() If it has 1 large chip, that says: RLVDL56DPF/SP R6785-61 It's a winmodem. If it has another large chip that says: 11229-14 It's still a winmodem, but known as the Rockwell HCF 2chip winmodem (the only 2 chip winmodem in existance.) Take it back. Refer them to me if they still insist that it's a "hard" modem. Get your money and get the Diamond. The 808hi site linked above and my modems page both have good info about HCF modems. FYI, a winmodem is any modem that can be upgraded striclty by driver software. There is no such thing as a "flash" for a winmodem, because there are no chips on the modem to flash. Winmodems do not contain their own flashable chips. ------------------ Who needs a life?, I have internet! Cheers, Jim Jim & Sue's Free Files | Jims Modems |

i have that modem, as far as im concerned it's inferior to my previous one (which i didnt have long enough to know much about before it was stolen). im not sure how much i should be worried about cpu usage with an athlon 600, but im fairly sure this thing connects consistently slower than my previous one. That one was great. it had all these neat FEATURES.. hehhehe nevermind

wish I could go with you to return that modem..im so tired of arrogant "service people" who really know zilch but will defend their "opinion=knowledge" to the death and try to make you feel stupid for even having the very idea of asking a question
![]() Likie Boot says-if they think their modem if "hard", they shldnt be selling it..and most likely-shldnt be selling ANY comput products!!! go get "em |
