It's probably looking for DNS numbers.

Have configured a laptop with RAS and trying to dial out of the network. But after dialing it says Dialup networking could not negotiate a compatible set of network protocols you specified in the server type settings. Check your network configuration in the control panel and then try connecting again.
What does this mean and how do I resolve?

Reboot:

DNS Address are NOT part of protocol negotiation in what is a PPP handshake? fyi, DNS Address are merely part of Framed Data as part of Radius info if at all that is a server assigned, This happens after both client and the server have negotiated the proper handshaking protocol and authenticated itself with Radius/Tacacs or some obscure authentication schema.

Vidya:

g'day mate ... Check your netowrk settings in you DUN connection, u will find Three Check Boxes
a) TCP/IP -- Must be ticked
b) IPX/SPX -- u dont need it ticked
c) NetBuei -- U dont need it ticked

if u still get the same error then speak to the Tech (no)Support ppl at ur ISP, if u use Bigpond ... all the best!

I have assumed you are using win 9x os here.

regards

As a matter of fact, many ISPs do not even require that you have any DNS assigned after logon.

True, its a client govern parameter not mandatory in Radius FRAME packets! as long as u have some name server/resolver configured somewhere(direct or indirect) in your settings

Not trying to get too technical here.
vital, you're right, but do you REALLY think that vidya understands you?

true keeping technical TLA' aside, but IMHO i still think giving wrong information does complicates what otherwise is a simple problem. In fault analysis of Vidya' problem, suggestion about DNS address(numbers?) takes it to a different tangent not related to problem at all. However, the correct reason is wrt DUN (Dial-Up Networking) Network protocol settings if not the underlying hardware/telco config.

no offence meant dude... further, if vidya is no able to understand it, let her/him say so! Her/his profile say NT Systems support as an occupation!
cheers
