I recently got DSL and I had it installed on my proxy server. On the Proxy, I have a 10Mb/s NIC (3Com 3C509B) and a 10/100Mb/s NIC (3Com 3C595). I have the 10/100 connected to my network and the 10Mb/s connected to the DSL modem. The question I have is: am I artificially limiting my connection speed my using the 10Mb/s card? Using www.computingcentral.com/topics/bandwidth/speedtest.asp I was able to get 1281 Kbps at the proxy. Isn't that the limit of a 10MB/s NIC? Should I install a 10/100 NIC and connect the modem to it?
TIA! |

A 10 base T card will do 10 megabits - you are doing 1.2 megabits - still plenty of room. The limiting factor on the 3C509 series is actually the ISA bus, not the 10 megabit bandwidth, but you should get at least 5 megabit throughput if your proxy server has any horsepower at all better than a 486SX.

Yeah, I thought about it after I posted and realised that it wasn't close to the 10Mb/s speed of the card.
The proxy is a Pentium Classic 133 with 64MB of RAM built on an old Intel Atlantis motherboard. Nothing fancy, but, it works. 5Mb/s? I'll play with it and see what happens. Thanks. |

Depneds on the kind of DSL u got, if its VDSL(WOW!!) you can get upto 52MbPS of download speed, if VDSL then u must upgrade ur NIC to ethernet FD 10/100. Other kind of dsl (ADSL, SDSL, HDSL, IDSL etc) u are fine with 10 MbPS.
