Juno works fine. They will send upgrades now and then while you connect. You can use it with a cable or modem. One thing it doesn't do is check mail every 30 minutes (or as specified). You have to physically say Check Mail each time. Also, when checking mail, it is NOT a background check. The program stays in the foreground during dial up, upload and download. You can move it around to get to other programs, but it's still in the way.
If you do have an ISP, you might try Eudora Lite. Eudora Pro can be free, but you get ads. Speaking of Ads, each time you log into Juno, you get two ads you have to ESC or Cancel to clear.
Upon installing Juno, you have about 10 pages of Marketing info (for each account). You can use your Juno account on multiple computers if you like.
I've used Juno for about 3 years now and I don't really have any major complaints.

I can not say how juno is, however I work at an ISP and we have tested connections to some of the free ISP's in the area that are taking our customers. To Be honest the connection seem just after fast say 42,333-48,000 what have you. That is what most people look at, but that is only the speed you conect to the computer you dial. It has very little to do with your download speeds...We noticed that the downloads were slower while surfing it took longer as well.

The Free ISP companies, I believe don't have as much money to invest in there equipment or the Backbone to the internet. So yes it is free, but you may have to give up some speed and or service...

Of course I am bias since I work at an ISP,

The right question about Juno(or any other ISP) should be: How it is in AREA YOU LIVE?.
In my opinion, in one area ISP might be less crowded, easier, faster connection. Or backwards.

I have Freewwweb, and I live in NY(where Freewwweb s$$ks), I see on forums, in other areas people are happy with Freewwweb.

Hey Junkman,
I've tried both and freeweb.com is a better way to go in my opinion if it works in your area. My mother-in-law is getting interested to the internet and wanted a free service to try out. I downloaded Juno and Freeweb. Juno has a "free" internet service WITH ANNOYING AD BANNER and a "premium" service (no ad banner) for about 10 bucks a month. On Juno's free service, you are constantly faced with an ad banner you have to move around to navigate, as well as constant promotions for their "premium service". Next I installed Freeweb and it seemed to work as well and had NO AD BANNER! I dumped Juno.

I second Ginatras's suggestion. I too use http://www.freeweb.com/

No ads, no B$. Mail works just like any other ISP I've ever had (paid for).

Juno is slow this is what WorldSpy.Net recommended to me after they finallif got out of Free ISP svcs. Try Ifreedom.com it has very lil' banner but you got to click there ads every 20 mins. For other freebies look at Lycos, Excite (Freelane), Netzero, Abc7, AltaVista and K-Mart(Bluelight) they all got banners but that's the price of a free stuff. Check the dialup numbers if they are all in your local access area. Finally double check there listed acess number with your local phone company for sometimes there listings are unreliables. I got in trouble with the listing of Netzero and I charged the cost of long distance to experience. *whew*

I've used Juno for years, even before they started the free ISP service. They started out with free email. As others have stated, the modem connection allows you to check email without going on line.

There are approximately 15 free ISP's (some are not 100% free). I haven't used Freeweb, but before worldspy closed down a few days ago it was one of the few without a banner, but there are several that has docks at the top of your screen and everything else fills in around that (full screen, but slightly smaller), and there is no blockage. Altivista is one of the best, I use it a lot. I use NetZero from time to time also, and they have eliminated the blockage also.

Hey Junkman,
As you can see, you'll get a lot of opinions. Download several of them. Try them out and see how you like them. Dump the ones you don't like.

In answering questions, it often helps to know where people are from. Some answers work better for certain locations than others. Quite often, you'll get some support from someone who is local and has specific answers for you. Also, giving an e-mail address will sometimes get you some answers that will get public posters in trouble!

But with that said, I've been using free internet providers since NetZero came online. I used to run around trying to signup for everyone of them "just in case"!

But I've found that the trick is hopefully you have at least a 17" monitor. But other than that, sign up for more than one of them. It will give you a constant connection for just in case. Only once in the past two and a half years, did I ever HAVE to use a third to make a connection.

Also, I use online accounts to handle my e-mail. These freebie guys may not be dependable. I got started with using onlines when I took some bad advice and used programs and methods to defeat ad banners. I got kicked off quite a few times...my e-mail was impounded with them! The ad banners work like cookies.

Some of those guys lock you out right away. Some, like FreeInet, play cat and mouse. They actually let you log on. Go thorugh the whole process, start to get your e-mail, then drop you as if it were just a bad connection!

The only thing that pay ISPs have going for me right now is that for EXTREMELY long downloads, they'll probably be better.

But if I'm that concerned, I'll push for DSL......
