IEXPLORE caused a general protection fault

I hope someone can help with this frustrating problem. I'm using IE 5.5 and when I go to certain pages I get the following error message:

IEXPLORE caused a general protection fault
in module JSCRIPT.DLL at 017f:712ce6a1.

(sorry about all the crap after the first two lines - I dont know if it helps so I left it in)

One page is my hotmail account.

(Oops - sorry about original post - must have Ctrl-V 'd a few times too many)

The other was one part of the search.microsoft.com site - there are others though

Thanks Morris but I dont think that this is the same problem - I'm working in IE 5.5 with Windows 98SE

Does anyone think it could be bad memory? I have seemed to had repeated reoccuring errors over the past year all related to IE and Outlook Express. Even reinstalls don't seemed to have helped or restoring to a ghost image from a 'stable' period - I guess that in itself shouts out 'hardware problem'!

You know, and I am rusty on this problem, but something tells me that you need to download and install the latest version of Microsoft Virtual Machine for Microsoft.com The fact that it is a Java Script DLL leads me to this.
Also, I do not have it here with me, but this months edition of MAXIMUMPC magizine has several windows tips including one that removes the interaction between EXplorer and IEExplorer therefore preventing IE faults from causing other problems and lock-ups.

One thing is sure and theis is not a hardware problem. What you are seeing in the message is that IE is trying to use the Java Script Dynamic Link Library to execute an instruction from the web page you are trying to view, and it cannot find it/it is corrupted/or it has been written over by a hostile Java script.
I am not sure you are aware but so-called hostile java scripts can do several things to your computer. Most are harmless and do nothing more than change your start page to a differant one or add website links to your favorites menu.

I think you may have a point there with the hostile java script - I know that I have had a couple of sites write to my favourites list automatically but hadnt thought that perhaps it could be corrupt. I've tried using Norton Utilities to find the problem - each time I'm getting these GPF's if I run Windoctor I get some ActiveX errors which it corrects - but then I start getting more errors (more GPF's and registry errors) - the whole thing is a bit of a nightmare - and I dont think Norton Utils helps!

Its reassuring to know that you think its not a hardware problem.

I'd just gone out and bought 256Mb Ram to try and solve the problem :-(
Fortunately it only costs £20 :-)
I now have 512Mb RAM 8-)

Can I not just copy over the jscript.dll file with one of another PC?

Neither Windoctor nor Norton Utilities will fix anything. In fact they'll generally make problems worse.

Bottom line, is if you don't trust a site you're about to go to, don't go there in IE with javascript on. Netscape's implementation of Javascript doesn't have one tenth of the security risks that IE does, and I even surf with Javascript off in Netscape as well.

Point taken - Norton can do more damage than good for sure.

I've managed to resolve my problem by extracting a new jscript.dll from the Windows CD and all now seems fine.

Thanks all for the advise and guidance
