Running notebook with PCMCIA modem/aol4.0/2 items in taskbar/win98/64 ram/PII-366....modem was connecting at 43-49K until last weekend..now i hear it downdrop while handshaking..no line noise observable on line/...now connects only at 33K or below??..prior to 2 weeks ago, no downdropping while handshaking and connecting at 43-49K. Suspect it's a telphone co problem?? Ideas??..tried it on 2 other computs on same line-similarly configured--same scenario(dwondrops while handshaking).

Sounds like you've already narrowed it to a telco impairment. Short of actual problems on line, have you added a telco line lately; if so, did your dropdown start then? If not, ask telco to do a FULL line test from your dmarc, and if they've changed anything on your line lately.

"dmarc" is the point where outside telco facilities connect to your inside wiring. On a house, it's normally at a box close to the power meter (for grounding). Since telcos are responsible for everything (without charge) up to this point, they have certain parameters to meet, concerning faults, noise, etc. If this "box" is one installed last several years, it provides a convenient and easy point where the owner can plug a phone, modem, etc. into it and see if the results are the same as they are inside the home. I've ran alot of wire to this point, put a jack on the other end and plugged a guys modem into it, just to prove trouble in the house.
