What would cause me to get disconnected from the net after being connected for just a short time. I'm using several of those free Internet Providers. I get disconnected from one, I try another and the same thing happens. After trying 4 or 5 I finally stay connected.

Question

Not entirely sure about this but I did have a similiar problem. I was given answers ranging from the sever been too busy to handle all the calls to there's too much crap on your hard drive and get rid of all the duplicates. Chose one provider and it might(just might solve the problem). Let me know will you. I don't have the problem anymore.

Many things to consider here.
What kind of modem are you using?
What driver version do you have?
Have you checked the phone lines for noise?
How fast are you connecting now?
If it's a winmodem, how fast is your computer, and how much RAM do you have?
Is AOL involved in any way?
What version of Windows, and DUN are you using?
How many icons are in the taskbar?
Have you tried any init strings?
Please fill us in with some more info.
Better too much than too little.

And time of day - happens morning, noon & night, or just in afternoons, etc? If have same problem with all these ISP's, I'd rule this out however. Answer reboot's questions and you'll be closer to an answer.

First, read this article.
Next, put the following init string in the extra settings box of Advanced modem properties: S10=50S11=50
Let us know how it goes.

Who's cared about the speks, just reinstall the comms - this sorts out disconnections 9 outa 10 times, then use a string to force a stable slower connection (v.34).

working on a helpdesk makes you harsh and to the point.................but it gets the job done ( well at least they don't call back)!

If it's happening across the board, the problem can be anywhere. Your phone line is the best place to start.

Last year, I had serious problems with connections. Had I only had a single internet provider, I may have laid the problem there. But I had several freebies and the problem would happen to each.

I finally traced it down to the phone company upgrading its lines. The things that were happening were probably not long enough to cause problems with voice transmission, but enough to cause modem problems with computers.

Since I'm an early riser, I noticed this problem only in the weeee hours. The service is great. My connection speeds are great, no matter whom I logged.

But I guess Freewwweb has gone south. The downloads are a bit slow now. A couple of months ago, I was up at 5+......
