Worldspy rocked but now is gone, I here Freewwweb is also going out, so my question is are there any good free ISP's left? I like netzero, but are there any left without the banner ads? Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Yes, there's still one - Worldshare. It's free or you can "donate" a one time $15. It's solid. I use it as a backup, and NO BANNERS. Go ahead and pay the $15 as $ goes to worthy causes. You can even pick where it goes.

Freelane by Excite is pretty fast and stable, once you get past the sign-up. When I do run it (if my local isp is down), I run it on a server, so my work machines don't have to put up with the rather large ad box.
Both freeweb and worldspy have gone to Juno. I helped a neighbor set up Juno yesterday, and when done I made a shortcut to the DUN connection.... Guess What?? it connected right up with NO ad boxes. He ran it all night and the next day without a problem. |

When I started researching our town for a free isp as a backup for cable internet, i made an amazing discovery. There were lots of free isps, but they all used the same telephone number. Several uses the same telephone number that Prodigy uses, their second numbers are all the same. I found one that has a different number, but it also lists the other two phone numbers to use. We had used prodigy, but kept getting booted. The same thing happens with the free isps that use that number. so the biggest decision for us was which banner ad did we like best.

REET, there are a couple of outfits that actually provide the free ISP service under contract for others. I think First Up is one. They do Address.com, Bluelight (Kmart), and a few others.
I used to use Address.com until they demanded that they be made the default homepage. The problem was that they saw any page with default/html as a competing homepage and wouldn't let me in. I wrote to them about this problem. They banned me instead. I was one of their first clients. I was able to get a three letter log on name! But I'm sitll using Freewwweb as of now. When it runs dry, I'll just use Alta Vista and FreeInet. Both are fairly reliable. |
