html editor (non-wyswyg)

I'm looking for a nice simple editor. I've been using Arachnophilia, but it doesn't show line numbers and that ia a big problem for me.

I've tried a bunch of them over the last few days, but I haven't been very happy with any of them.

I have 1st page, but it's such a huge package for such a small job.

Just looking for suggestions.

(1) should be smallish and quick

(2) has to use line numbers

(3) should be able to tile multiple windows

I don't need internal viewers, image editor or any of that bloat.

Thanks (I have gone thru 12 sw/fw editors in two days. please help :-)

Ultraedit (http://www.ultraedit.com) is a good one too.

Hi nightfishing,

I've always liked NoteTab Light, it's free too.

Allaire's/Macromedia's HomeSite is the overwhelming choice among those of us that hand code. It has some pretty cool features like changing code globally and thru ftp. The only question mark is it's future. Macromedia now owns it and there has been talk of it being discontinued. There is also a free trial download.

I have also heard good things about textpad and ultraedit but mostly as php editors

OK, I'm giving HS a go and here are my first impressions.....

(1) interface is almost IDENTICAL to 1st page (or, more accurately, 1st page is almost identical to HS).

(2) seems fairly stable and quick, despite the ridiculous bloat involved in the package.

(3) only advantedge it seems to have over 1st page is it's ability to remember it's settings! (1st page dumps back to default settings for the explorer pane with every launch).

I'm going to push it hard for a few days and see what happens, but the price, both in comparison to 1st page (free) and in light of the fact that it is probably sonn-to-be-abandonware, seems a bit much.

Thanks for the help, though, and here's hoping that Aracno adds line numbers to a future release :-)

He said he didn't want wysiwyg or preview panels or any other such stuff .

Programmer's File Editor

I use it, love it, and won't switch from anything else if on a Win9x or NT machine. Thankfully, Notepad in Win2k can now jump to a certain line number so I can use it at home, but at work on NT 4, PFE is the only one I use. No installation required, it's a standalone executable, and it's also freeware.

I'd agree with Mosquito and so for UltraEdit - its the best editor I have found.

Personally, I'd stick with Arachnophilia. It's hard to beat at the price-- free.

ok, after 5 days of testing, here's what I found:

Arachnophilia - only lacks a couple of things

(1) line numbers in the display windows
(2) ability to control tag/text colors is limited.

HTMLKit - most interesting of the alternatives. Same basic layout as Homesite and 1st Page, but much "lighter". Ridiculously user-configurable; actually too much so, a bit overwhelming. It's major drawbacks are the confusing layout and the lack of a "details" view in the explorer pane. A ton of plugins available and an obvious choice for someone looking for a tool that will do, pretty much, whatever you program it to.

HtmlTool(lorenz graf's) - almost identical to 1st page, but not free.

CuteHTML - nice and simple, but offers very little that UE and other text editors don't. Has an annoying habit of reclaiming shell extensions.

1st Page - nice package and still FREE. A lot of bloat, though, and ultimately undone by it's inability to remember it's explorer pane settings.

HOme Site - best of the pack, despite all the unnecessary bells and whistles. Almost identical to 1st Page, but better behaved. Fairly quick and lite on the resources despite it's size. Works well w/ 3rd party apps. Price is a sticking point, though, especially compared to "free", but, it is never wasted money if the app is used everyday and helps facilitate the work being done.

About 13 others registered little more than sameness and sloppy uninstall processes.

In the end, it's still Arachnophilia for me, but I will keep testing Home Site, I am actually wondering if an older, less evolved version of homesite might be the ticket.

If I every get to the point where my code isn't such a mess (lol), than I will probably end up w/ UE or the like, but in the meantime I need a bit more structure :-)

nightfishing,

my version of arachnophilia (4.0) does display a line and col info in the bottom right corner of the status bar. did you ever notice that? maybe this solves your problem. I really appreciate arachnophilia.

Yeah, it is just a pain to use. I try to code my pages so that certain sections "line" up on certain lines, and it is much easier to see if the numbers are on the code screen.

Same goes for running a validation; small annoyance, I know, but with 5000 html editors out there, I really though there would be one that was just right :-)

I wish I had the patience to set up HTML-Kit, but ATM, I just don't have the time.

Drop Paul an e-mail - he might be able to add that feature easily in his next build.
