Is there anywhere within PCMECHANIC or other site where it tells you how to connect to a STANDARD ISP without using their software thru using DUN?

I plan on requesting Earthlink's service today. Once I do it this way, can a family member use my account with my consent from their house since I plan to share this account? Will they need to do the same I do in their computer? Thanks.

Last time I checked Earthlink didn't have proprietary software, you just connect through DUN anyways.

All you'll need to connect from different locations is a local access number and the username/password. Anyone with a number and the account info will be able to connect from anywhere.

Charles,
I'm thinking to get Earthlink too.
When you call, ask for:
Primary &econdary DNS #'s,
Outgoing Mail & Incoming Mail server address. If you plan to use Newsgroups, ask for News Server address.
I think, this is all you need to setup DUN and e-mail/newsgroups.

When you get this:
Start> Run,
type inetwiz, hit enter or click OK.
Enter what you're asked for.

Did I forget something?

p.s. Latest software Eartlink has is ver. 5.0 which as I heard isn't good.

Cool

It sounds like you're planning to connect from two different locations at the same time, using the same account... is this right? If so, it's against their policy (maybe the law) and they very well have internal protection against it... ie: one or both computers will be cut off.

Earthlink works quite well with "server assigned" DNS and IP addresses. All you need is your login name, password, and a local dialup number to plug into the Internet Connection Wizard. Your login will be "ELN/username". Mail servers are both "mail.earthlink.net", incoming and outgoing. Incoming is a "POP3" and outgoing is a "smtp". Email login is "username" along with the same password. The network components you will need are as follows: Client for Microsoft Networks, Dialup Adapter, and TCP/IP. (Note - do not include the quotes in your login)

You can let as many people as you want use your account, but as with AOL, only ONE connection at a time is allowed. If someone else is on line with your account and you try to log on, you will probably be blocked. If you are not blocked, they will note the multiple connections in their server logs and send you a warning letter. There are no extra "screen names" as with AOL - just a master account.

Question

Earthlink account is rolling. I noticed is slower than AOHell and the sound coming from the modem as it is connecting is not tone but pulse. Could that be the local # they gave me? Thanks again.

Earthlink is an excellent service. It was my last pay ISP, almost three years ago! I usually recommend against installing an ISP convience disc. They usually have an older version of a browser that I was running at the time. Earthlink was no exception.

But you'd be surprised how much the telephone company plays in slow internet traffic. Using free ISPs, I was able to see through logging on to various services, whether or not the problem was with the ISP or elsewhere!

Pulse? You need to fix your dialing properties in the modem properties. If it seems slow, you may not have the modem installed correctly. What is your indicated connect speed?

Also, in the properties of your DUN connection, make sure the only 2 boxes checked on the settings tab are "enable software compression" and "TCP/IP". Any other selections will slow things way down (log onto network, additional protocols in particular).
