Is it only google or other pages too?

I've noticed that I've needed to power cycle my switch after a storm, even if everything looks fine connection-wise, when I can't get to certain sites.

Alright, well I reset everything and for some reason I'm still not able to bring the site up in either browser, or even use the Google search tool in Firefox.

You have been blacklisted by the google gods....

You must endeavor to find out how to appease them for reentry.

Can you get to it by IP? Try http://72.14.205.103 .. Or can you do a route check (from the command prompt) .. tracert www.google.com or tracert 72.14.205.103
Have you scanned for malware on your computer recently? Have you checked your C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file to see if you've got google in there? Are you using any downloaded host files etc? Also if you've got a router or a firewall filter make sure that you've not got google.com as a blacklisted website.

The ip link came right up. Hopefully it's just a spyware problem - I'm going to run Adaware and Spybot soon to see what they can find. I haven't cleaned out the spyware on my pc in awhile.

I found a file simply labeled "host" in the etc folder, along with ones named "networks", "services", "lmhosts", and "protocol". What are those files?

The "hosts" file lists entries that automatically redirect to other places. For instance, the entry for "localhost" is in there, which redirects to 127.0.0.1

Typically, it's used to "blackhole" sites known to serve ads or spyware. You do that by adding the entry "127.0.0.1 eww-spyware-website.com", with the actual website address), and you recieve a "page cannot be found" error in your browser (or any browser on that computer) iif you try going to that site.

Long story short, check to see if google got listed in there as an entry. Since there is no extention on the "hosts" file, you'll need to open it with notepad.

Sometimes, spyware applications write to that file and add entries.

Open a command prompt.

Ping www.google.com. What IP is listed? If it isn't 72.14.205.103 you have a DNS issue. Try running ipconfig /flushdns

Opened all the files in the etc folder with wordpad and nothing looked strange (not that I would know though). The host one only had localhost at the bottom with a paragraph or so of instructions on what everything meant in the file.

I pinged google and the ip coming up is 64.233.187.99

I did the dns flush command but google still isn't coming up. I'm going to run the spyware programs tonight and will post back with the results.

I appreciate all the help so far guys. I'm learning stuff here which makes it worth the hassle.

You get the ip address 64.233.187.99 when you type in the command of ping google.com, but you get the ip address of 72.14.205.103 when you type in ping www.google.com. Double check that and make sure before you jump the gun here.

Didn't know it made a difference.

I typed in "ping www.google.com" and the ip that comes up is 216.239.51.99

It also says I'm pinging www.1.google.com when it begins, even though I'm typing it correctly.

The request doesn't go through this time, it simply times out four times in a row.

You have some malware in there somewhere that's redirecting you if another computer on your router is working fine. If you can't find it, post a HijackThis log in the Security forum.

216.239.51.99 is a google owned IP and http://216.239.51.99 does take me to Google.com

Are you behind a router? Take a computer out of the LAN by connecting it directly to your ISP's line and try it. Have you tried a tracert to google.com? It could be an ISP issue as well.

I've had sporadic problems with Google loading properly. Typically, it can be attributed to a lost path on the ISP's DNS servers and a few hours clears it up - at least, in my experience. It should never be out for a few days though. Try contacting them to see if they are aware of the problems.

If you can ping it and trace it, it should theoretically come up.

I have somehow appeased the Google gods because tonight when I got home from work, Google came right up. The Google search in Firefox works as well.

Any clue why it suddenly fixed itself?

Sounds like DNS problems on the ISP's end.

If you are not able to access a google website only, then it cannot be a problem of DNS Server of the ISP. Maybe your google website is not registered with your DNS Server or the google website can be down for maintainence purposes.

ITlover: Please read the entire thread before offering suggestions. It confuses the issue when you provide generic questions for the issue - especially when others have taken the time to do so before. It is also part of posting etiquette to address the issue(s) on an ongoing basis!
