I hope this is the correct board for an outlook express 5 question. Here goes:
I have a certain e-mail header that causes my entire system to lock up (requiring a hard boot). The e-mail is from a trusted source (relative) and has an attachment. I can read and select all other headers/e-mails in my inbox without a problem but as soon as I click on this particular message my system freezes. I've tried not downloading the content of the e-mail when selecting it using (Tools|Options|Read) without success. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to excercize this e-mail from my inbox? thanks in advance. |

Do you have the preview pane enabled? If so, disable the preview pane and try to delete the message.

That's what I meant when I wrote:
>I've tried not downloading the content of >the e-mail when selecting it using >(Tools|Options|Read) without success. The Preview Pane box is UN-checked. I still have the problem with lockup in this configuration. My only thought is to move ALL of the other messages in my inbox to a new folder and then delete my inbox folder. Is that possible? |

quote: Ther is a way to get to your mail via the net and so delete any mail without having to download it. Unfortunately I have forgotten the way to do it. But if you get on to your server you should be able to find out from them. Hope that helps, best of luck |

Whats your server type: POP3 or IMAP?
Anyways most decent IMAPs have an implementation of POP headers too .. so this might be very generic [IMAP is on port 143 though] for POP ... Consider- your POP addy is: mail.yourisp.com your username is: jharris your pwd is: sirrahj go to START>RUN and type: telnet mail.yourisp.com 110 and enter on the telnet screen the prompts are selfexplanatory .. u might wanna go to preferences and turn on local echo if you want to see what u type [assuming u are using default telnet client for windoze] you log in using: user jharris[enter] pass sirrahj[enter] after you have logged in .. some of the basic commands you can use are help, list, uidl, retr #, dele #, rset, top list# lines# ... Read abt RFC headers/cmds of POP from the web. Not that it will help much necessarily, cos unless you specifically asked for it .. OE will delete the mail from the server once retrieved. Try this .. go to security settings for internut explorer and disable all scripting under the sun, that means ActiveX, java, javascript, controls.... or make them all prompt. Then try reading the mail that was sent .. chances are the error is caused by some script that isnt getting the right sec. permissions in the first place... so much so for OE's preview pane ![]() HTH |

As an afterthought .. if none of your safe methods work out .. u might want to do this .. but be warned this is destructive.
FWD all your mails that u want saved to a freebie accnt like at hotmail .. then go to TOOLS> Options > maintenance .. click the store folder button, copy the name of the folder that u are currently using to buffer [CLOSE OE!!!] then navigate to it on your Win Explorer, then try renaming Inbox.dbx into Inbox.bak and try starting OE. |

If youre keeping a copy of your messages on your server. Delete your folder, go to mailstart.com and view youre messages there. You can delete the ofending one. Reinstall oe5 and redownload the rest.
