I'm going to get it if it ever becomes available to me. The few people I know that have it are pleased with it.

If they're laying the fiber cable, it should be about 2 months or so that the service will become available. They laid our cable around Memorial Day, and I had my install on 7/16.

They offered 5 down/2 up for $40, 15 down / 2? up for $50, and something else for even more. I went with the 5/2 since I had been using dialup and figured that was plenty fast for me.

In 2 months of frequent use I have had one hiccup in service. Rebooted the pc and all was well, so I doubt that even that hiccup was FiOS related.

It's a great service.

Fiber Optic line is easy to make and maintain. It is literally just plastic. Really does not make a lot of sense for ISP to charge ridiculous amount for FIber Optic internet.

Well, um, it does cost them millions of dollars to lay the fiber optic line. They are entitled to recover the costs in a reasonable timeframe. Otherwise, you know, they'd go out of business, then there would be no provider.

Most likely any fiber Verizon is laying down is glass.

I would go with FIOS again. It has been by far the best choice I made in my new house.

I have the TV service and really like it. The HD channels in the basic package is what sold me.
The DVR could use better functionality however, I think that they just released a new one. Since you have to rent the equipment I may ask for an upgrade.

I have the tv service, it kicks the crap out of my (former) Dish service.

Std Def channels are much better, hi def channels are MUCH better. The only "glitch" is a new version of DVR software they downloaded recently, but they're bug-fixing that as time passes.

Dish and DirectTv both down-rez their high def to 1440 or 1280x1080 before overcompressing it and sending it to us. People are generally measuring top bitrates of 12-13 on a very few HD channels from the satellite companies. FiOS is putting out 18-19 Mb/sec, which is about 50% higher bitrates. It is easily visible. It spanks Dish HD.

Great channel selection, better package prices then I had with Dish too.

Really, I just love everything about FiOS.

I didn't get the VOIP though, I kept my standard phone service.

Dish surely has the most HD channels, but if you're going to ruin the quality, what's the point? I'd rather see Verizon add new HD channels slowly as they are able to improve capacity (whether by hardware or software means). Last thing I want is a slew of HD channels that show macroblocking every time there is a water or fire scene.

I was pretty happy with Dish, other than that.

sorry to bump a 5 day old thread but im very curious cuz fios isn't available yet where I live but i sure as hell want it. I can't stand comcast! they throttle my upload speed, and fios has faster down and upp speed for the same price. Anyone know though if the advertised 15/2 service is that fast though? I know it depends on peak times, server, etc. but hopefully if it becomes available its actually faster than comcast cable. Then again, i think im locked in for a year with comcast cable. I have their tv, phone and internet. They have monopolized me. I need to sever the ties with them. Maybe verizon will pay my early termination fee with comcast if i switch over. that would be nice

From what I hear VZ hits their promised speeds most of the time. The techs explain that you basically have your own dedicated fiber line. Neighbors' activity has no effect on your bandwidth/speeds.

My 5/2 is rock solid. Guys at AVSForums with faster service are very happy.

The only way you will ever get Verizon FIOS is if you are in an area where Verizon is the local phone company. AT&T may have something similar - someday - don't hold your breath.

If you can't stand Comcast, good luck - there's not anything much better out there. You can get faster upload speeds if you pay for a commercial account. I wish I could get them here - my cable company (Cable One) totally sucks. I'm making do with 1.5/384 AT&T DSL.

Hi G!

AT&TVerse is what they are calling it here. Right now only available in LA, Bay area, and Sac areas. Don't know if I'll look into it but the salesmen for it are on the phone, at the door, and at BestBuy. Prolly will be here soon.
