how to import to ie7 w/o working pc?
Greetings,
My pc's motherboard died, and I decided (regretting it now) to buy a new one rather than fix it. Since all there is in the stores is Vista machines, that's what I'm stuck with. So, since I only have a hard drive and no working pc with XP, Works, IE6, etc., I am having a real hard time getting my data onto the new machine. I'd like to get cookies and favorites from my old machine to the new one, but have no way of exporting them to a file so IE7 can read them. Is there any way? I found a program for $19.95 but I already am contemplating spending $29 on a program to be able to read my stored emails from Outlook Express. Not that either is a lot, but Vista is getting expensive. Microsoft does not seem to consider people with only a hard drive, not a working pc to migrate from. :-( Thanks for any advice Sandy |

Wouldnt it be possible to hook up your existing harddrive to your new rig & bring them over that way?
My favorites are saved on my C: drive under documents & settings. It should be possible to install the hard drive & then do a search for your favorites. |

It's fairly easy to import the favorites & emails without the need to spend money on 3rd party programs. The only catch is that you need to have a way to connect the old hard drive to your new system. If your new computer is not a laptop then its fairly easy depending on the type of hard drive (P-ATA or S-ATA). From there on in, it's just a matter of copying files over between disks.
Let us know if you can connect the old hard drive and we can provide step-by-step instructions on where to find your old data. Addendum: You dont even need the old hard drive connected to your new PC to retrieve the data. If you can connect it to someone else's computer, you can simply copy the files onto a memory key or CD and move it over to the new computer. |

If you feel confident enough to remove your old harddrive, you can access it without opening up your new computer's case with one of these adapters.

Thank-you for your replies. I do have the hard drive connected as an external drive using a hard drive enclosure and can see them. The problem is IE 7 does not store them the same way (everything with Vista seems stored a new way). IE 7 requires the import to be one file of all the favorites or cookies, which you can do by exporting them from IE6, but I can't do that, as I don't have IE 6 on the working pc.
It's not super critical, I can maybe print them out or something. Thanks, Sandy |

Maybe I'm missing something. Favorites in Vista are under Computer>C:/>Users>(user name)>Favorites. Just copy them to a flash drive and paste to the new machine/hdd in the correct Favorites file.

To follow-up from PR's post .. the only difference should be that XP used to store the favorites are in the WindowsXPDrive>Documents and Settings>UserName>Favorites while Vista's is in C:\>Users>...
Transfering your OE emails to Windows Mail in Vista is quite simple as well. First run a search of the old WindowsXP drive for *.dbx files (files for OE's mail store). Once you find out the directory. Open up Windows Mail. go to File > Import > Messages > Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and Select Import from an Outlook Express 6 Store Directory .. then Browse to the location on your Old XP Drive's OE mail store. |

Thanks for the location of the favorites, Panama Red. Not sure how I didn't see that.
My outlook express had 4 identities. I was told you can only have 1 in Windows mail, which is why I was going to use the utility I found online to browse .dbx files. I could put my main email in Windows mail, though. Thanks for the info, Statica. Thanks for all your help! Sandy |

Windows Mail did away with the multiple identities for one account (a questionable move IMO) but there is a paid alternative .. read through - http://help.lockergnome.com/windows2...ict484432.html
On the other hand, you could use something like Thunderbird . If you use it you can import your messages using: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Import_from_Outlook_Express (Read the section on Advanced Alternatives to convert your .dbx files into mbox files). Personally I like Thunderbird infinitely more than Windows Mail .. especially with add-ons for it. |
