update problem

None of the computers here at work can do a windows update, and they cant do a symantec update. I ran a tracert to
microsoft.com
symantec.com
and the last 10 or 11 hops all timed out.
I then did one to
google.com
and it went through fine.
Am I correct that the problem has nothing to do with anything where I work?

Theres a chance that both of those sites or any place in between are blocking the tracert.

Is this a manual windows update through the website?

Could those sites have been placed on a block list?

yes it is a manual windows update, it seems like the automatic updates will go through, but not the manual, live update from symantec will not work at all. I'm pretty sure those sites were not put on any block list.

today now i was finally able to do first a manual windows update, then later a symantec live update. After loading windows xp (without sp2) on a couple machines I couldnt update and it kind of scared me, I ended up just shutting them down and unplugging them, I didnt want to have to reload the OS twice.
