Mail server

ok. I just register my domain name, soon will be having internet cable(comcast). I will like to set up a email server for my family. I have been reading a bit but I,m I little confused with the xm records, dns, And so on. Is for my family use and not for business. And plus for my expirience to learn this stuff. Is there any guide avaliable for dummimies or, for some of the members of this forum to point me to the right direction.

Unless you have a business cable account, Comcast is going to block port 25 (SMTP) traffic on your server which would prevent you from running a mail server.

Setting up a mail server is not something that you can do out of your house unless as Faulkner mentioned, you have a business class account with a fixed IP address. Even then you really don't want to do that. There are too many spammers out there looking for mail servers that were setup improperly to be safe. If you want to have your own email you can do that pretty easily. Just buy a domain name and either have someone host it or use gmail for domains.
