Hey everyone, I'm a DSL Technical Support Specialist at an ISP and I'm interested in everyone's experiences with DSL ... whether it be provided by telco, ISPs, etc ... DSL is not yet available in my area and I only have my experience working at an ISP to go on (I'll post some info about that a little later) so I want to get a more general feel for what it's like out there as an actual customer ... thanks!
(Please post your provider, $$$ you pay monthly (if you don't mind, that is) equipment that was provided, speed, etc ... as much detail as possible ...) And NO, this is not a project for work, I'm just curious ....

HAHAHAH HAHAHAH HAHAHA you better hope your not technical support, I have had so much much trouble with ameritech 40 per month, 768/128 that we are insisting on one year free. We have been waiting for installation for about 2 months, we were originally scheduled for august 14th, but they said they couldn't ocme. And every call since then has been a call to hell. "We'll call yo back within 48 hours, sorry for the inconvenience, it wont happen again" this happened 2 times, where they said they would call back in 48 hours. I am fed up with this crap, At this rate i'll never get my DSL

- Mindspring Max 1500/384 (I average 1200/300)
- SpeedStream 5260 ADSL modem - Installation and modem free - $49.95/month (6 month contract required) Works great on my Linux box. No complaints. As a side note, Covad couldn't run the ADSL over my main phone line. They had to run a separate data line, but there is *no* extra monthly cost for it. All appointments were kept (yes, Bell and Covad!) and the installation took only about 20 minutes. |

Telocity SDSL 416/416 (Chicago area)
$49.95 a month, 1 year contract Free proprietary router and line installation Customer must install router to computer and configure it, software provided but not necessary if you have a basic understanding of TCP/IP Install went smoothly, Ameritech prepared line to the demarc on time, Rhythms tech arrived exactly on time to run inside wiring, router arrived Airborne Express while Rhythms tech was on site. Router synced up first time and downtime has been minimal. One major problem - we had problems with one of our voice lines due to a storm - Ameritech came out and found the DSL line had no dial tone (DUH) and cut it. Took a week to get them back out to fix THEIR screwup. When we called Ameritech to complain, they basically asked us "What is DSL?" Bottom line - Telocity is a quality provider, and Ameritech is a total joke. [This message has been edited by glc (edited 08-29-2000).] |

lol Glc, I had a similar issue. When I moved in to this apartment, the phone was supposed to be turned on by the time I got there, it wasn't.
So I get ready to call telco and rip into em for not turning it on in time, and come to find out that the guy who cuts grass at this apartment complex cut the lines of everyone in my building...with a weedeater... BTW, SWBell DSL, PPPoE, 40 a month, one year contract, free install. Get 140-185k on the download side, 25-35k on the upload side. Downtime has been minimal so far, can only remember two outages longer than a few minutes over the past month or so. Xayd [This message has been edited by Xayd (edited 08-29-2000).] |

Actually, if you want a myriad of DSL experiences, go to http://www.dslreports.com/
Tons of reviews there. |

Qwest(US West)ISP/DSL Provider
650/250 Just yesterday I switched back to dial up from DSL. I had DSL for about 8 months and it was great when it worked. However, while surfing it would lock up intermittently and I would have to reboot the computer in order to log back on again. There were times when it worked great and was up for 2 or 3 days but then I'd experience a rash of lockups maybe 5, 10 minutes apart. It's a great service but I it's also fairly new and I know that many providers have some bugs to work out. |

101freeway.com/GTE (oops! I mean Vorizon) 768/128 down/up, $49.90/month, no contract, 30 day trial, no startup fee, free modem.
80 Kb/s transfer rates. 30mb downloads in 5 minutes. What's not to love? I wouldn't go back to dial-up for nothin' or nobody!!!!!!! |
