browser configuring

I just hooked my pc up with a wifi adaptior card. Successfully found my local wireless network and connected with its encryption key.

Problem. My computers never been connected to the net so the browsers arn't working. They load up, but cannot connect. I think I may need a proxy address but have no idea if that the case or where to get it.

any ideas? My operating system is XP (pre service packs, that right there are no service packs or updates on this thing, which is the first thing I'll do when I connect up)

Since you said encryption key im gonna assume your using a router.

This sounds like a gateway problem. Meaning your not getting through your gateway to get onto the WAN (Wide Area Network). Check the router configuration. Make sure your needed ports are open and not being blocked by any firewalls.

I haven't had much time to think about my problem, but i briefly spoke to my flatmates boyfriend who's in IT and setup the network. He said my other flatmate had the same problem. He was sure exactly what he did, but might have used a static IP since he said no packets were being received.

Sounds to me like someone turned the DHCP option off on the router. Which would give you an IP, if that is the case then yes you need to use static and inform the router of the IP you will be using.

I've tried connecting to the rounter with my LAN card, but no luck. Probably the same problem is stopping me talking to it via wires. How do you talk to the rounter?
