I would like to upgrade my net connection from 56K to something much faster.
I have been told of a satellite wireless company that will give you 400K download speeds for 19.99 per month and I am considering getting this service. I also think that you can use a Direct TV satellite to get both Direct TV and satellite wireless. Does anyone have this system or know anything about it. Here is the Web site: http://www.direcpc.com/ |

$19.99 only gets you 25 hrs per month. For unlimited usage it is $39.99 per month. I don't know anything else about it, but I am looking into it as Cable and DSL are not available where I live.

From what I've seen and heard, one way satellite is a flawed concept and inherently buggy. When I worked at that local ISP here we had a few dialup customers on one way satellite, and they in general weren't impressed.
Problem I see is this... With a satellite, your ping time to the host machine is enormous. 500+ at all times, whereas even at 56k you shouldn't see ping times to servers within your country past 400. The nice thing about satellite would be the ability to get huge packets, so to compensate for the high latency, you'd get a big ole packet every second or two, instead of smaller packets every fraction of a second. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but on a one way satellite setup, with uploads still going through a modem, wouldn't the issue of packet size limit you tremendously or cause terrible instability in your apps by handling two different packet sizes? If you're using dialup packet sizes, what's the point. If you're sending and receiving different packet sizes, that seems like a buggy concept to me. This of course wouldn't be an issue with two way satellite, but the ping issue would still be there. Two way would be great for surfing and downloading, but forget about gaming online. Xayd |

Hi Harry, I'm about to try it out with Look ... install date is sept. 19. Cost for unlimited internet access is $23 and the basic TV package is about $20 CND. Nowhere was it mentioned that this is DSL but it could be. Will report on this after trying it for a little while.

DirecPC is for the birds, not to mention when I called the sales person he was a *$*%#&%:^%&. After I looked into it a little bit further the only fast speed is on downstream because the upstream is still done via your standard 56K modem and either your ISP or one they have available. The Rep states that when you send the data it is routed thru their system and assigned a satellite routing code and that is how you receive it....This information was as of about 3 months ago and I still don't think anyone has accomplished an upstream via satellite.
Good Luck!! |
