HI guys and girls,
Not sure if I am in the right forum but I am interested in how to get a server up and running that can support loads of sites, how do I assign IP address and where do I get them from ??? I want to try and set up a web hosting business in another country in a few years time and I just can't seem to get the right information. Cheers |

Oisin,
To get IP address's you need to contact either the carrier of your T1 (or Greater) line they will assign you a bank of IP address's and you'll have to pay a monthly charge for the use of them. Or you can contact internic, I think they also or at least ultimatly do the IP assigning. Then you need your servers, routers, switches, hubs, and other networking equipment. Depending on the class network you want (there are no more Class A) you can expect to pay anywhere from a couple $million$ to a few $100K just for the IP's not including the equipment. |

You would need a business class account from an ISP in the country you want to host in. The ISP will usually give you a set amount of addresses for your monthly fee, and if you want more, you'll pay extra. For example, at one of the site I work, the ISP gave us 8 IP addresses included in our montly fee. We could bump it up to 16 addresses if we wanted to pay extra.
Bottom line is that the ISP will take care of giving you addresses. You just have to shop around for the best deal (assuming you have some choice in the particular country you're planning on doing this in). |
