does ubuntu have to be installed to use the internet

i have been wanting to install ubuntu on my computer for a little while now, and i've been trying to get all the bugs worked out on the live cd before i actually install (i dont have enough space on my free hard drive to dual boot) it seems that i can get most of the little problems worked out if i had internet while on ubuntu

i was also wondering about beryl on ubuntu 7.10

If the liveCD already has drivers and has the support to enable network support, it should be able to connect to the internet. I have never tried an Ubuntu liveCD, but if it's like other Linux distros, it should be able to auto config your NIC.

As to Beryl on Ubuntu, it works pretty slick, and looks pretty cool. It is a pretty big resource hog and to be honest, doesn't really serve a big purpose besides looking cool. Just make sure that you have a fairly decent CPU and Video Card and Beryl *should* run fine on it.

Are you saying you've managed to work out all the little bugs? Or you think you could IF you had internet?
Theoretically, anything that works in the liveCD (ethernet drivers, etc) will also work in the final install. My experience is actually that some things that didn't work (graphics drivers) in the live CD worked just fine when I actually installed.

If you've still got your windows installation CDs and license code, and you back up your data, you have nothing to lose (except some time) by trying Ubuntu; if it doesn't work, you can just go back.

Beryl's quite nice, but you must have a 3D graphics card and the appropriate drivers.
