Here's the problem. In IE5.0 no images will display for web pages that are on my hard drive only. The images are there for internet web pages. When I open up my local web pages in Netscape, the images display, so it's not an html problem.
Yesterday everything was OK. The only thing that has changed since yesterday is that I was changing some file type options for jpgs and gifs this morning. That must have something to do with the problem, but I can't figure out what. Even when I put the options back the way they were, the problem persists. I also ran the IE repair tool, but it did not help. BTW: Internet Explorer version 5 OS Windows 95/a |

I think this happened when you changed your file associations, remember unlike netscape, IE is a part of Windows. The default when you downloaded the pages was, "Open In Internet Explorer" and since you changed the association the pictures do not open. Reset the associaltion by using the right click "Open With" option for these files.

I should have mentioned that these graphic file types have never been assoicated with IE. They have always been assoicated with Paint Shop Pro (open) and Photoshop (edit). When I installed IE, I did a custom install and asked it not to associate graphic file types. I really don't want to associate these with IE which is what I think you're suggesting I do.
Nor does this explain to me why this happens only with local files. Any other suggestions? |

You haven't moved the folder that the pictures are in from their original download locations have you. In this case IE will not know where to go to get them. I also suggest that you download and install IE6 as it has much better support for graphics and the manipulation of the same.
Also I do not suggest using custom installs when downloading IE, instead save the file to your drive for a later installation which gives you the full program. |

I think I'll just have to use Netscape for now. With a 56k dial up connection, downloading browsers is not an option. If I figure anything out, I'll follow up here. I may have to re-install all of my graphics software and do a clean installation of IE to get back where I was. I'm thinking the problem must be in the registry. Based on what you said before, it sounds like IE relies on the file associations to display local graphics, but not internet graphics.

An option for getting a full version of Internet explorer is go down to your local Radio shack and get a free copy of the MSN Internet disk, and then install IE from it.

It wasn't a high priority, but I finally got around to fixing this problem.
I uninstalled IE, restinstalled IE and allowed it to set file associations, which was different than the way IE was originally installed. Still local pages displayed with no images. Then I deleted the image files associations bmp/gif/jpg, etc. These were 1 entry pointing at Paint Shop Pro. After I did that IE was fixed. After I reassociated the image file types 1 at time, IE is still working correctly with regards to the local image display problem. Conclusion: The problem was in the registry, but I still don't know how what I did fixed IE. Oh well.

Reading this thread carefully, I have to add a word of caution for the future - IE6 is not compatible with Win95a.
