Sharing private files
I use torrents etc for music/movies, but need something that will be able to transfer private files up to the 500mb range as quickly as possible without making them available to the public.
I've heard of FTPs but don't know anything about them...would they work? |

First off, check out rule #9: http://forum.pcmech.com/rules.php
Second, most ethernet interfaces are 10/100. You would need gigabit ethernet interfaces on your computers and networking devices to achieve anything greater than that over a LAN. As soon as that hits the internet, though, all bets are off.

I don't expect you to believe me, but I'm not sure what I could say that would ![]() I don't need anything better than lan, but it just seems like transferring files via msn messenger/limewire would be too slow and I don't want videos of my play getting out to the general public (ie that could get my play exploited). If I do it with torrents, wouldn't the general public be able to get access to them? dave21, never thought of it, no. How do you transfer files via irc anyways? I thought that was just a chatting client? |

Force flow is referring to your comment on using torrents to download movies, and not the fact that you are trying to share private info with your friends.
You can use irc to transfer files just like msn etc, but you have to set it up, I haven't done that in awhile. You might want to google it. Also another route may be to use megaupload or even yousendit to upload the file. Google them to find out more. |

It's a lot easier to use MSN or another IM program to do it - with IRC you have to forward router ports to get DCC through it. I frequently use AIM to send files to people. There is NOTHING that's gonna work over the Internet that's any faster. It's reasonably secure if you are both in front of your computer and initiate the transfer manually, you don't have to expose your upload and download folders to the public at large.
