I would try to uninstall teh failed installation if possible.

Use something like ccleaner to get rid of all temp files, and temp internet files.

Then try to download it from here: http://www.download.com/Windows-Live...html?tag=lst-1

Still refuses to work after cleaning all the temp files and downloading a fresh copy of the program...I don't understand why windows is being stupid like this.

It's the actual installer itself that allows the install of windows live messenger. I try the file on my desktop and it works fine. It however refuses to work on my friends laptop which has a fresh install using it's system recovery program. The laptop model is Compaq Presario V2000.

You need to run Windows Update and get all criticals - keep getting them till there aren't any more.

I even installed all the dot net fix and service pack 3 and still wouldn't work. So I was wasting more time trying to find a fix. I decided to just redo the install and see if it works then. This time it did work with the 2nd re install of Xp. My desktop pc only has service pack 2 and no other updates on it.

Try running this Script. (You can put it in a batch file) (The faces are a colon with a left parenthesis)

@echo off
Echo This batch file will Set Service Object Security for WUAUSERV & BITS.
Echo Please wait...
@echo on
sc sdset bits "DA;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRP WPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)" >>C:\SetServiceObjectSecurity.log
sc sdset wuauserv "DA;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRP WPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)" >>C:\SetServiceObjectSecurity.log
@echo off
Echo Open C:\SetServiceObjectSecurity.log for SUCCESS entry.
Echo Open the Services applet from control panel to see if the services are started.
Echo For any errors; report on http://groups.msn.com/NTarabia
@echo off

I had the same problem with all Windows Live products. There's an easier way than reinstalling windows. Go to Start>Run, type 'cmd' and enter each of these one at a time, hitting 'enter' after each one:

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll

This will fix a variety of problems people have with Windows Live products and other windows update issues like repeatedly getting a message from the security center that automatic updates are off when the automatic updates window says they are on.

I've seen this problem 3 times now in the last month. 2 PC's with clean install of windows xp home 1 with a repair install of xp pro all 3 were SP2 disks. I went to update.microsoft.com and it promps for SP3 install which I did on all 3. The SP3 install seems to go fine and system works great, THEN update.microsoft.com or automatic updates finds several other post SP3 updates I believe and tries to install them. They download fine but update site or automatic both crash and say updates could not be installed.

I dug around site after site and finally found a page that said open wups.dll with regsvr32. I did that this morning and my automatic updates icon disapeared. Going to try all of them

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll

Tonight! I hope it works because it's a major issue and uninstalling SP3 is only a temp fix in my mind. I don't think a clean install would make any difference if your using a SP2 disk, be right back to square one. My live messenger installer also errored out, had to download and run the messenger 8.1 installer.

I think whats bad about this is M$ can't put an update out to fix this issue because automatic updates is busted lol, ironic eh? Going to be a rough road ahead for us all I think.
