T1 vs. DSL

I currently have a DSL connection at work but we were thinking about getting T1 line. DSL is through Ameritech and rated at 768. We would only be using 6 channels of the T1 for a speed of 384. What I want to know which one is better the DSL@768 or the T1@384. They guaranteed the T1 to operate at a minimum of 95% of 384. Ameritech DSL guarantees nothing like that. As a matter of fact I've never come close to 768. So which is better?
Oh yeah, T1 $200.00 bucks more.

With a T1, you get special treatment when trouble pops up. You also have a dedicated spare line to your place that's already setup to switch over to should your line not be fixable immediately. Telcos will call a tech out at 2 a.m. if necessary, even Christmas morning. Amazing to see the wheels set in motion when someone says, "We have a T1 down". It's also rated at 1.544mb

Thanks for the responses. From a reliability stand point it sounds good. But what about the speed. Like a said we pay $40.00 per month for DSL rated at 768kbs. We would only be getting 6 channels of the T1 or 384kbs for $200.00 per month. The sales guys claimed the T1 would be just as fast as DSL because the speed is guaranteed to be at least 95% of the rated speed(384)it. DSL providers make no guarantee. Do you agree?

with a T-1, you do get what you pay for. its basically guarenteed bandwith both ways. if you want reliability and consistancy, then go with the t-1.

Please share with us where you can get a 384k T1 for $200 a month - and what else does that include, if anything? Last time I talked to AT&T they told me that their fractional T1's start at $700 a month.

Corecom is the company. They are packaging in local telephone service, long distance, 10 phone lines and 6 channels for internet service. 1 of the phone lines will be an 800 line. The cost is right around 580.00.

I didn't mean to imply that I could go out and buy 384kps for $200.00. It's $200.00 more than what I'm paying now from Ameritech for basically the same thing but with DSL service.

Any one know what sort of price T1 is in the UK and the companies that can provide it.
Just interested - I doubt I could afford it!

Not necessarily - it's just that Corecomm bought out my local ISP and service went down the terlet - and I have heard people complaining about Corecomm's telecom quality of service. I am far from being an Ameriwreck fan, but some of these 3rd party telecom providers are a lot worse. Remember that Ameriwreck does everything they can legally get away with to make it difficult for any competitor to use their infrastructure for the "last mile".

DJ - I have a friend in the UK who was looking at this - and he says that T1 prices over there are absolutely outrageous. To get pricing you can start with NTL or Bloody Thieves (BT).

Just for the heck of it I called Ameritech to see what they would charge for T1 service. They wanted $1500.00 just for the install, I stopped them right there. $1500.00 is just too much up front, especially when Corecomm was a free install and free Cisco router. But anyway as it turns it out Ameritech is running a special, 1.5 mbs (256kbs upstream)DSL service for $79.95 per month with 5 static ip's. That's only $30.00 more than paying right now for 768kbs and a dynamic ip. This seems like a pretty good deal to me. What do you think?

Yeah - if all you want is DSL, go for that deal - their DSL is as reliable as anybody's but you will NOT get the QoS that you would with *anybody's* T1.

My old college had T1 fitted for a year, I belive it cost them including fitting ~£14,000 for the first year! Ripp of UK.

Yeah BT stil have a strangle hold over the market here - they don't drop their prices without a fight.
Looks like T1 is out.
And costs £39.99/month for 500kB/s ADSL with BT.
I think NTL do 500kB cable modems for £25.00/month which is what I think I'll go for.
You guys in the states get it a whole lot cheaper I know!

Cheaper yes, but no more reliable.

As expensive as raw bandwidth is from the telecom providers here, the only way to be profitable as an ISP is to vastly oversell.

Yup T1 over here is a joke, damn BT.

It costs (roughly) with BT:

56k unlimited: 12.99 a month more
ISDN : 20 quid more
ADSL: 40 quid more (In SELECTED ie.NO areas of the country)
T1: Lots (really not sure) Can you get T1 in any area (You can't get ADSL where I live)

I happened to see someone ask a www.jolt.co.uk admin and their 2Mbit lines cost between £16,000 - £20,000 per annum. I think they are provided by BT.

So unless ure a big business forget about it in the UK Some companys will fit multiple DSL lines for a cheaper package deal. At least thats what my formal college did.

For that price, in some areas if ure close they will dig the line to you, for extra price, this info going from the lots of setups my old college went through during my time there.

I did business with Ameritech this summer. I got a full T1 installed at the main office, and all the others got fractional T1's. Here's the problem. Ameritech is a contractor, and they are HORRIBLE at it. We were suppose to get all offices (12) installed and in operation by July 13th. By July 13th, the Cisco technician was finally coming to the main office to redraw the WAN and LAN layout for all the offices. It wasn't until early September that we got it installed. After talking to the tech's (who were very knowledgable, but I got a different one every time) they told me that the headquaters ignores the broadband department. After all the legal issues, they invested all their time and efforts into the phone technicians. No one did anything about DSL or T1. So, although the few tech's Ameritech has that are very knowledgable, the administration SUCKS. BTW, by the time they got the line in, they said they had to have a Cisco tech come in and connect it to our PIX firewall. That would take about another month. So we had to do it ourselves, without any prior cisco experience, it was about 8 hours with a console and a pizza.

yeah so do i, but my upload is only 50k. but dont forget t1 is much more reliable.... don't be fooled, rr is faster than a full t1, but a t1 has multiple channels. It has a lot more capability than a cable modem
