Back-Up Solution
I hope I am posting this question in the right area. Our accountant uses a usb thumb drive (64MB) each day to back up some data. The thumb drive is old and is coming apart. Instead of getting a new one, I was wondering if there was a better way to do this. Obvisouly the point is to back-up the data and get it off the premesis in case of a fire or computer crash. I know there are websites that offer back-up solutions and usually give you a few Gigabytes of storage for free. Can someone recommend one? It obviously needs to be secure and trustworthy, as this is sensetive information. It also needs to be very easy in terms of the back-up process. Thanks.

Why not just back it up to a CD-R or RW?

Why not an online backup service? I did a quick Google Search and found this one : http://mozy.com/
However I would do some research on which one is the best one if you go this route and I think I heard some sites give free storage up to a certain MB or GB, this way he wouldn't have to take anything with him and his data would be safe. Of course I'm assuming an internet connection.

Personally, I would not recommend Xdrive - too many bugs.
Microsoft has Skydrive now, but I don't know if I would use it for business purposes. I'm currently using Data Deposit Box, and it works great. Pricing is not bad at all - $2/GB, easy to use, you can access your files from anywhere, customizable, backs up data when your system is idle. I've heard a lot of good things about mozy.com as well. There are many other options online that are free, but again not sure how comfortable you would feel about having your business data online with "free" services. Just my two cents. Good Luck. |

Flash memory keys are dirt cheap now. I'd recommend a new key, you can get 1gb keys for 10 bucks. He/she already knows how to use one. Don't try to reinvent the wheel.

Very true, but shouldn't one have more than one back up? just in case the media gets damaged, lost, etc.?

Amen.
I use a 2 GB USB key for my backup. Fast, cheap and reliable... you can't beat the combination. |

I guess there are many different ways of doing it, just a matter of personal preference...but as long as the data gets backed up, the method is irrelevant.
