HTML links in email no longer work.

Hi, thanks for reading.

I installed IE 8 the other day, ugh...please don't say anything, yeah, I knew better. It was very slow to load, made my system act like I had an old Intel Celeron, it didn't scroll up and down very well, I could go on, but I won't.

ANYWAY...I took it off, used my Mozilla Firefox to install IE 7, and after that my links that I get from the forums for emails to threads I'm watching no longer work.

Also, I have a few icons on my taskbar for the Quicklaunch, and they don't work anymore either, for either browser.

Is there an easy way to fix this? I uninstalled MoZilla, and reinstalled it, and it didn't help.

Thanks for any ideas, Mark.

Edit --

My Google-Fu found this site: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q177054/ , and it helped me to set IE 7 as my default web browser, so my HTML links work. Now only to set FF as my default somehow, it doesn't seem to be working the way it should. My main dislike is that IE 7 opens my email links all in the same browser. Maybe that's a setting I can fix later, but at least it works.

Edit - WOOT! All done. I think. I hit Shift+E for the capital letter, and my cursor jumped down to the bottom in a new window labeled Quick Find. Hmm. Oh well. I'll deal with that on another day.

Thanks for reading.

Ah HA!! http://mozillalinks.org/wp/2006/11/t...uick-find-bar/

Tweaking the Quick Find bar

Removal fix in four steps:

1. Type about:config into the Firefox address bar and hit the Enter key (or press the “Go” button). This will take you to a special advanced configuration screen.
2. Your cursor should already be blinking happily in the “Filter” text box. If not, click in that text box and type “typeahead” to narrow the options down to only those relating to the Find-As-You-Type feature.
3. Check the line that begins with accessibility.typeaheadfind.autostart. This controls whether the browser will start searching text on a web page as soon as you begin typing, without having to first invoke the “Find” dialog by pressing Control–F or typing a forward-slash. I had disabled this feature in the Firefox options, but for some reason this value was set to “true.”
4. If accessibility.typeaheadfind.autostart has a value of “true” on your machine and you’re experiencing the same bug I was, try double-clicking that row in the about:config interface. This will set it’s value to “false,” which solved the problem for me.

All done! Thank you John!

Helpful hint...never try out beta software...especially MS beta software...on your production machine. Either have a secondary "playtime" machine for beta software and software you just want to try out, or set up a virtual machine that you can blow away. Microsoft virtual PC 2007 is free.

That's a great idea. I have an old Compaq on the floor next to me that isn't plugged in. I've been meaning to use it with Linux, and get the kids familiar with it. I don't want them getting familiar with anything at the cost of my own pc. Call me selfish, but at times I don't even feel comfortable with my wife on this thing. It's amazing how much damage a person can do when they don't know what they're doing. My mom used to be terrible, her computers were always running 15 or 20 programs at startup, crawling along at a snails pace. But she thought that was normal because all the computers at work are just the same. LOL!

Using the virtual machine would be a great idea, I've always wanted to try that out too.
