slow internet

Hello all
I have a cable connection to get online and im useing a wireless Linksys router and somehow my internet is very slow. Sometimes its fast and sometimes it gets so slow my download rate is 25 KB a sec. could someone give me an idea on the steps that I may need to take.

Was it working fast before you used the wireless router?

Are you sure you aren't downloading anything in the background? Or if someone is connecting on to your network?
