Quotes displayed wrong

Okay, this is kinda weird.....just want to see if anybody else has ever had this happen or if it's just me. Occasionally I'll go to a site and things that are in quotes will be screwed up with a capital "A" with the tilde above it (like this... Ă).

I thought it was taking the place of the quotes, but it's not. It's just added inside them; for instance, the quote might look like this.

Then she said "ĂI don't think I want to go with youĂ."

There's one of those A's at the first and last of the sentence, but in between the quotes. I don't know whether this is a browser problem or just a shoddy job of coding on the web page itself. Browser is Maxthon (IE based). Any ideas?

Posting a link to an example would be nice.

That's usually indicative of a website coded in Word with Smartquotes turned on.

Hi guys....sorry I didn't get right back to this. Had a storm with a LOT of lightning in it last night so I couldn't stay on the puter.

Any way to find out what the website is using and if that's the case? And, if that IS what's causing it, then why the heck would they code their site using that, if it's just going to screw up when displayed in a browser window?

In IE, you can try different VIEW->Encoding options....I tried a few and got some to change the A to little square boxes

Some people just don't know any better, including some web monkeys that really, really should. I don't know how many times I've explained this to my users.

Well, from the looks of it, I guess it's not just something I was missing on my computer. I initially thought maybe I didn't have a certain font installed, but that's true, glc, it IS in the source code. Guess it's not me then. Thanks guys!

The probably did a copy & paste from some other page and didn't quite proof-read whether it got transfered over correctly for whatever reason .. their HTML editor .. the source material being in a different format etc etc.

I see that garbage all the time in all 3 of my browsers. I guess because a Word document can be saved as HTML, now everyone thinks they are a web developer.

I don't know squat about HTML or web development - what little work I do I use a WYSIWYG editor - but I at least have the common sense to look at the finished product in all my browsers to make sure it doesn't do crap like that.

It's not that common. That's the problem.
