PHP on computer

In the past couple of days I performed a fresh HDD reformat. After doing so I installed the necessary programs and such. I also installed PHP and Apache for site design. When I do the phpinfo() function it shows up as it's supposed to. When I get any more complicated, both Firefox (3) and IE (6) will show PHP code as text. Why is this? I've attached a bmp and an original PHP file in ZIP form. If anyone can get the PHP to work, then please let me know what you've done for it to do so. Thanks.

Maybe I should just switch to writing ASP pages. I see it as being about as easy as writing PHP pages and with not having to use Apache but the easier-to-install IIS, maybe I wouldn't have such a headache in resolving this matter. Does anybody recommend this switch?

I'm not sure if you're on linux or windows, but there's the basic steps I usually go through for setting up a windows dev server:
