Cool Importing "favorites"

I am switching from Verizon DSL/MSN (where I have been for several years) to Comcast broadband internet access. I want to import my list of favorites from my MSN home page to the Comcast home page. Actually, I guess it would be from tool bar to tool bar? Can I do this?

If you're just changing the home pages within your browser then there shouldn't be any need to export favourites/bookmarks.

I am not just changing home pages. I am changing internet service providers from Verizon DSL to Comcast Broadband.

Send a message via AIM to Panama Red
Who you use for an internet provider makes no difference to your home page OR your Favorites. Think about people who travel with their laptops and use free WiFi hotspots. They never change their home page and their Favorites are always available. They just use a different Internet Provider.

I'm not getting it...

OK. I'm starting to feel a little less than intelligent here...BUT when I log onto the internet via Verizon and I click on the favorites tab, I get a list of about 50 favorites (including pcm) that drops down in the middle of the screen no matter what page I am on. Whether I'm looking at pcm, the local weather, or my home page. When I log onto the internet via Comcast and I click on that same tab, I get a generic list of options that drops down on the left side of the screen. Even when I go to my Verizon sponsored home page via Comcast, it's still the same small generic list down the side. So, I am thinking that the home page shouldn't have anything to do with my favorites list but has everything to do with the internet service provider. OR, there is a tweak in my machine that I haven't accomplished. What I infer from Panama is that the favorites list is hosted by my machine and not the ISP. (Pardon me while I think outloud.) So, how do I unlock the favorites list when I use Comcast?

Unless your new ISP has installed its own browser like AOL do then I really don't see why you're having an issue.

From your comments about the position that your favourites appear - middle with Verizon and left with Comcast - when using the different ISPs I can only assume you're using a different browser.

Assuming XP as OS here - go to:

My computer - C Drive - Documents and Settings - 'Your profile name' - Favorites. Open the favorites folder.

If this contains your favorites as you normally see when you open the favorites tab then you are set - the providor is just altering the web page to make it look custom but the source data is in the standard location.

If not then you will need to check the FAQs of your exiting provider for backing up favorites and the FAQs of the new for importing them - my guess is that both use this folder though.

I think you may be using MSN Explorer with MSN and Internet Explorer with Comcast. 2 different browsers.

This is why I refuse to install any ISP-provided software, period. It is not necessary, all they are doing is holding your hand and trying to lock you into their content.

Broadband logins are handled by the provided modem/router. There should be no need to log in to anything on your computer except your e-mail.

How do I change the browser from one to the other? I bet it's just a matter of which icon I click on.

When you click the Start button what shows up at the top left, Internet Explorer or MSN Explorer?

MSN Explorer. Internet Explorer is at the top of the recently used icons. MSN Explorer, being at the top of that list, makes it the "default" browser?

Your tag line, "Want to Make $$$$ with your Computer? No Risk! Simply press shift-4 four times in a row" didn't work for me. I got to four and nothing and then on the fifth, I got a pop-up talking about stickykeys. I turned on the stickykeys and tried again and still nothing. Is this a test?

What he means is to hold down the shift key and press the number 4 key four times, which
will give you $$$$. A little humor.

Not necessarily. To see which is your default browser, click on a URL link in some other software and see which browser automatically starts.
