File zilla

I'm trying to setup a home FTP using Filezilla. I have XP pro and am not sure about the proper procedures. I have downloaded filezilla, but I get stuck in setting it up. How do I get an ftp address? How does the person I want to share files get her ftp address and how do we share them for file transfers? Can anyone help me walk through the setup process?

Thanks!

Chris

The general idea would probably be

1) Get a domain from dyndns.com (Since your IP address would change occasionally)
2) Set an oddball port for FTP in filezilla
3) Open that port in your firewall

Depending on your ISP, they may frown upon this, and they don't tecnically allow servers to be set up at residential connections

I think what you're looking for is a FTP server. It's pretty straight forward if you want to share files within your network. It gets a bit tricky when you want to share over the internet though.

Filezilla has both client and server distributions.

well , I can connect to the filezilla server using the same system its setup on buy going to enternet explorer ftp://192.168.1.xxx
What I want is to be able to connect that way from any system thats online with my external IP.
I have set a DNS account and put my IP address in and creat a host name and all that. How do I apply that to filezilla , and is that the answer to connecting externaly .......

1. Have you forwarded the appropriate ports in your router?

2. If you have, its simply ftp://yourhost.dyndns.org or whatever your dynamic DNS account is.

If you know your external IP, you do not need a dynamic DNS account, you can simply use your external IP. This still requires correct port forwarding!

The missing link seems to be the need to set the static IP address on your network card. Not to insult your inteligence but go to the network properites of the network card:
  1. Control Panel
  2. Network Connections
  3. Right-Click your ethernet card
  4. Properties
  5. Internet Properties (TCP/IP)
  6. Properties
  7. Instead of obtain IP address auto set the static IP you have the port forward set on your router

By the way is this a Windows Server or Windows XP box?

You may need to make an exception in the firewall.

Control panel > windows firewall

Note, using the default port is not reccommended as:

1) it's a common port, commonly scanned by people looking for open FTP servers
2) Your ISP might be blocking it anyway

So, I'd use a non-standard port like 1247 or some such thing.

On my FTP server I'm running I use the following settings:
PC running server has a static IP
setup my ftp server to run on a port other then 21
I have a DYN-DNS name
my firewall (Comodo) is set up to allow my selected ftp port access
My router is forwarding my ftp port to my static IP
I also allow the ftp server PASV ports to be forwarded to my static IP

When you select a port to use other than 21, don't forget to change it in your server settings.
