Track E-mail
Recently a friend of mine recieved an e-mail from someone using a hotmail account. The e-mail was sent to her and quite a few other people she knows personally. So it's obviously someone that knows her. The e-mail was VERY threatening and degrading. Is there anyone by you can track down the sender by looking at the e-mail headers. There doesn't appear to be any false information in there. Any ideas?

Report them to hotmail but I would doubt that hotmail would release a name.
In any case there is no guarantee that the name used to sign up for the account is real. So really you don't have much of a chance of finding out who it is. |

I'm looking more toward bypassing hotmail and using their IP. Is there anyway from that standpoint?

People like those accounts from hotmail, excite, email, etc. because of the anonymity that they afford. And if you happen to be in back of a firewall and router, probably pretty hard to trace. Plus someone that is going to send threating mail would set the account up and send the mail from a PC other than their own, unless they are incredible stupid. Maybe best thing she can do is change her email id. and be careful who she gives it to.

I recommend you to download the message from hotmail to outlook, then you get the Ip from the message properties, then go to www.samspade.org and get information about the ip.

Got to remember if you do get an ip address is may be dynamic and therefore change each time the user logs on.

I looked at the e-mail properties and found the IP Address. The sender's IP address is the one after where it says "X-Originating-IP:" Correct? I took that IP addy and went to that web site and found a local Cable Internet company owns it. From there i guess I'll just have to contact the Cable Internet provider for the rest of the information. Thanks for all the help.
