Removed a virus now IE doesn't work need help

Hello does anyone have any ideas or info to help me, i had a virus after getting rid of it Internet Explorer doesn't work. I can get e-mails and AVG updates it appears that IE7 is the only thing not working.
The computor in question is a laptop, running Windows XP Pro with Internet Explorer7.
I usually run wireless through a Linksys Router but even hard wired the same thing happens.

When I ran a network diagnostic these are some of the things that came up.

Check firewall settings for the HTTP port (80), HTTPS port (443), FTP port (21).

Last diagnostic run time: 12/05/08 08:23:14 HTTP, HTTPS, FTP Diagnostic
HTTP, HTTPS, FTP connectivity

warn HTTP: Error 12029 connecting to www.microsoft.com: A connection with the server could not be established
warn HTTP: Error 12029 connecting to www.hotmail.com: A connection with the server could not be established
info HTTPS: Successfully connected to www.microsoft.com.
warn FTP (Passive): Error 12029 connecting to ftp.microsoft.com: A connection with the server could not be established
warn FTP (Active): Error 12029 connecting to ftp.microsoft.com: A connection with the server could not be established
error Could not make an HTTP connection.
error Could not make an FTP connection.

I don't know how do this or even where to begin. Some recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Do you have any add-ons or toolbars in IE?

I have the same problem

I am also running Windows XP Pro, but on a desktop (Dell Dimension 9100).

I tried reinstalling IE7, then IE8, then back to IE7.

On IE7, I can connect to a couple of websites, but most tell me that IE cannot connect.

I also have the additional failure mode that my Hotmail accounts no longer work in Outlook 2003 (they have worked for a long time with IE7, I don't remember what I did to work around the compatibility issue).

I would appreciate any help on this - it's extremely frustrating!

Thanks!

I did some additional searching and found this (see below) posted on another tech support site:

It worked for me. My LAN settings had the "Use Proxy" box checked. I also had the "automatically detect settings" box checked. As soon as I unchecked the "Use Proxy" box, everything works fine, including getting my Hotmail in Outlook.

"ports 80, 443, 21
I am not a geek and probably do not belong here but I want to let you know how I solved the problem. I have Win XP and IE7 and Road Runner cable. I suddenly was unable to connect and the windows self-diagnosis gave me these port errors and said to check firewall, etc. I plugged these http ports into Google and here I am. After dicking around for 2 days (and using Firefox in the meantime) I checked my LAN connectivity settings. It is suppossed to be on "automatically detect settings" but somehow had slipped into "proxy server". All I had to do was set it back on automatically detect. Problem solved."
