new network cannot connect 1 to cable
Hey gang. I have a problem. I have just connected two computers to a 4 port Cable/DSL linksys router. Both computers are showing networked and both are showing lit on the router. But one computer will connect to the Cable internet but the second will not. The one that will connect is a brand new dell system with windows me and has never had any other internet connection established. the one that is not connecting has had Prodigy on it since day 1. It is about 3 years old. It had windows 95 originally but has been upgraded to windows 98. I have removed Prodigy and all internet connections, but for the life of me I cannot get it to connect to the internet. It just gives me a "work offline" error or says that there is no internet connection. HELP! I did the linksys online setup through the dell system and when viewing the DCHP log, it shows both computers. but on the older computer, it will not even do the http://19****.1.1 page to allow setup. Just get the "no connection to the internet" error.

Go to control panel-network highlight your NIC, select identification, and put in computer name and workgroup.

Make sure you have TCP/IP bound to the NIC, and set the WINS tab to use DHCP. On the other tabs, get IP address automatically, remove any gateway, disable DNS. In Internet Options, Connections, LAN settings, uncheck ALL boxes for proxies and auto configure.
